Check Out This Exhibit on the Weimar Period Films

I was on a roll and had the museum two-day pass in Frankfurt. I decided to give this museum a try, although I am not very educated about films and how they are made. Just by chance, the museum had an exhibit on Weimar films and changing views of gender in that period. This was a great exhibit!
The Weimar period (1918-1933) was a period of experimentation and trying new things in Germany. This era really deserves more study, but unfortunately it is frequently overlooked, because everyone focuses on the Nazi era. (See also the Babylon Berlin series on Netflix.)
The exhibit had wonderful explanations (in Egl too) on such films as "Girls in Uniform," "Different from the others," "I don't want to be a man" and other titles. The original "Viktor Viktoria"--later re-made with Julie Andrews and made into a Broadway show too, was also from this period (1933). In fact, from the clips, the 1933 version looks like it was so much better.
One of the major German actors of this period, Conrad Veidt (1893-1943) is known to North Americans as Major Strasser in Casablanca (1942), but he made many famous films in the Weimar era, before leaving Germany in 1933.
Marlene Dietrich's dressing up in the tails and top hat in "the Blue Angel" (1933), was actually pioneered in several other pictures in shows, another gender-bending exercise. By the time MD did it, it was merely naughty/cute.

Nice museum, not at the level of the one in Turin, but in my opinion much better than the one in Amsterdam. So many things to see and quite interactive.

The German Film Museum knows as (DeutscheFilm Museum) in Frankfurt is a must visit for film lovers. They hosted the equivalent of the oscars night in 2018 and it was amazing!! It also showcases feauture films and also if lucky you get to talk and listen to the film diresctors and script directors and asked questions about the film. They showcase films from across the world and during black history month they had a whole week dedicated to black film!! I

Tegenvallende tijdelijke tentoonstelling

Vaste collectie was zijn prijs waard. Het gaat terug naar begin van de film. De tijdelijke tentoonstelling Im Tiefenrausch, was een absolute tegenvaller en zijn geld niet waard. Waar je hoopt iets over de effecten te leren, hoe effect van lang en diep onderwater te bereiken zonder gevaar voor de acteurs, krijg je te lezen over waarom ze onder water zijn. Dat is niet anders dan de film eenvoudig uit te leggen. Verder is niet fijn dat je bij elke verdiepeing weer je kaartje moet laten zien. Waarom niet 1 centrale ingang/controlepunt?

Interesting museum with interactive exhibits

Really enjoyed this museum, especially the interactive exhibits that talk about the history of videography. It was a very informative visit that exceeded my expectations. We spend a bit more than an hour there, wandering in the two main floors but we could have spent more

Nice interactive museum. It shows real items from famous films (oscar, wigs, suits etc.) but also has an interactive part where you can make your own pics in a green box. Price is ok.

Interesting and worth visiting but it could be much more complete story

A lot of interesting things to see. The permanent exhibition has two parts. First part takes you through the basics of capturing and rendering pictures and movies and the second part talks about different elements of the movie. Allow 1-2 hours.

Unfortunately it does not include much about modern technology

Fun and fascinating for kids and grown-ups. Rapture of the Deep exhibition very captivating.

I really enjoyed my visit, and I'm not even a film buff! So much more to early film making than I could have imagined. Some hands-on displays really bring the older technology to life. The Rapture of the Deep exhibition until Jan 2023 was both immersive and inspiring, with many different aspects of underwater film presented. The second floor has movie props, and a screening of highlights distilled from many disparate films. The DFF has much to fascinate kids and adults alike.
Prudes take note: You and your family may be exposed to the briefest glimpse of... human nudity! Apparently Germans never learned to be ashamed of the human body. So unless that offends you, grab yourself a Museumsufer ticket and dive right in!
Final note- they do not allow photography here. A good Idea I say, as it would really distract from the experience for everybody.
