Segways were fun but tour guide made experience negative and uncomfortable

Deciding a rating for this experience is difficult. Segwaying through the city was a great experience, however I was disappointed with the guide and the company's response to my complaint.

There were just two of us taking the tour, myself (female) and my partner (male). When conveying information at the various stops around the city, the tour leader would talk to my partner and rarely look to me when talking. Even when I asked a question, the answer was delivered to my partner and the tour guide would only briefly look towards me. It is a core skill of a tour guide to include the whole group and this was not met, despite just two of us in the group. As this was happening from the beginning of the tour, I can only assume this was gender based. Despite the fact that I was the person who booked the tour, I first greeted the guide and I paid for the tour, I was marginalised and not fully included which is disappointing. Whether this was intentional or subconscious, both my partner and I left the tour noting I was excluded. This is a really disheartening experience to feel like you aren't respected or valued in a conversation, or that the tour guide isn't interested in engaging with you.

I emailed the above issue to the company. I received an apology however this was highly dismissive as it was followed up by saying theyve only had positive feedback about that tour guide, that I probably misunderstood, and that I should have raised the issue on the tour.

While the tour guide did welcome feedback at the start of the tour, I was not comfortable raising this issue as I didn't know how the guide would respond which could make the three hour experience even more uncomfortable. For participants to feel comfortable raising issues, they need to feel respected and valued which I absolutely did not.

The company have not responded to my second email. I would have been happy to discuss the issue with the company to understand why it happened and understand how they will avoid it happening again but beyond an initial dismissive apology (where I was blamed for not raising the complaint during the tour), they have decided not to engage with me.

The tour guide also a comment during the break that he sees one of the biggest issues in the country is the number of refugees. It was made clear this was a personal opinion, however this made me feel very uncomfortable and attacking some of the most vulnerable people in society isn't something that should be expressed on such an excursion. This is clearly a cultural difference on what we view as acceptable to discuss, but a company that offers tours to people from different countries should be aware of cultural norms.

Lehrreiche Tour mit sehr viel Spaß

Die Tour war super, wir hatten trotz Regen total viel Spaß und haben noch viel Neues über „unsere“ Stadt gelernt. Johannes macht das super!! Danke für den schönen Ausflug, Sonja und Marie

Ringe Tour. Kölner Veedels.

Schöne Tour entlang der Kölner Ringe. Gefallen hat uns vor allem das belgische Viertel und das Gerling Quartier. Johannes führt die Gruppe sehr gut und erklärt umfassend und verständlich. Gerne wieder.

Wir waren nur eine kleine Gruppe und mit Johann unterwegs. Es hat großen Spaß gemacht. Es war unsere 2.Tour durch Köln und jeder Zeit eine neue Tour.

Es war eine tolle Erfahrung und wir konnten viel über Köln lernen. Das Segway fahren hat unglaublich Spaß gemacht. Das beste war, dass die Tour individuell gestaltet und auf die Gruppe angepasst wurde.

Die Tour mit Guide Johannes war sehr gut geführt, informativ und kurzweilig. Die Vorbereitung war insb. für die Segway-Neulinge wichtig und gut gemacht. Alle haben sich auf der Tour wohl gefühlt und tolle Eindrücke mitgenommen.

Schöne Tour durch Köln.

Wir waren eine größere Gruppe. Einweisung war für jeden zugänglich; Tourroute war abwechslungsreich (schön war der Rheinpark und die Südstadt). Johannes spricht auch deutsch und englisch, wenn es sein muss. Kommen gerne wieder.
