K20 is situated near the Rhine and is a short walk away from Heinrich-Heine-Allee U-Bahn station on line U75.
The collection in K20 is primarily from the 20th Century and is very good.
A good selection of work by Paul Klee, as well as by Kandinsky, Kirchner, Beckmann, Picasso and Matisse.
There was also some interesting surrealist offerings from Dali, Magritte, Miro and Ernst.
I spent an enjoyable ninety minutes here browsing the exhibits.
I paid €18 for a ticket to view both K20 and K21. K21 is around a mile south of K20 and there is no longer a bus to transport you there so I made my way on foot.
K21 is in Standehauspark and contains mainly 21st century art and installations.
I found this not so interesting although I did like the Amazon Worker Cage by Paul Denny and some photography by Wolfgang Tillmans.
Probably not worth the long walk from K20 but overall a enjoyable morning viewing the decent art in the first gallery.

De Mondriaan-expositie was mooi en interessant al vonden we het vreemd dat zelfs een kleine handtas in de lockers opgeborgen moest worden met als gevolg dat ik mijn telefoon steeds in mijn hand moest houden, want geen kleding aan met zakken. Zeer aanwezige suppoosten maakten het goed bekijken van de schilderijen wel lastig, want we moesten wel veel afstand houden.
Toen we vervolgens de vaste tentoonstelling wilden bezoeken, werden we door een zeer onvriendelijke suppoost tegengehouden, want manlief had een jasje aan en dat mocht niet en het buideltasje met de passen en paspoorten moest ook in de locker. Er werd dus echt verwacht dat wij al onze waardepapieren in een locker zouden stoppen. Ons bezoek aan K20 was dus snel afgelopen. K21 was wel prachtig en mochten we wel bezoeken met een buideltasje en jasje aan,

Die Ausstellung "Mondrian. Evolution" ist definitiv sehenswert.
Positiv gegenüber der Ausstellung über Georges Braque als Zeitgenosse Mondrians sind die wieder klassisch weiß gehaltenen Ausstellungsräume hervorzuheben - das in der Braque-Ausstellung verwendete triste Grün paßte definitiv nicht. Zudem sind die Erklärungen zum Leben und Wirken Mondrians nicht zu überbordend und auf ein vernünftigen Maß reduziert - somit auch textuell eine Annäherung an das Bauhaus.
Wer bisher Mondrian nur als Herr der Linien, weißen Flächen und farbigen Rechtecke in den Grundfarben kannte, der wird erstaunt sein welch Entwicklung der Künstler genommen hat - von kleinformatigen Werken die nicht immer eine Lebhaftigkeit aufweisen aber nach dem Geschmack der damaligen Zeit für drei Mahlzeiten, Farben und Leinwand für den Künstler reichten - über die erste Annäherung an die Moderne und an die Moderne selbst.
Zwei Bilder sind dabei hervorzuheben, die zeigen, daß Mondrian auch ein schneller Maler gewesen sein muß. Dies wird an zwei gleichformatigen Bildern sichtbar die nebeneinander hängen und als Motiv eine Windmühle abbilden - links das Bild zwischen bürgerlicher Dämmerung in Orange - rechts deutlich nach der nautischen und ggf. kurz vor der astronomischen Dämmerung in Blauschwarz und Schwarz. Da der Standort des Malers sich höchstwahrscheinlich nicht änderte, kann man aus der Wanderung des Mondes von Ost nach West in den beiden Bildern erkennen das Mondrian diese Bilder zumindest in weniger als zwei Stunden - eher einer Stunde skizziert haben muß.
Insbesondere die Bilder welche kurz vor dem ersten Weltkrieg durch Mondrian gemalt wurden weisen im Gegensatz zu Endpunkt seines Schaffens eine Lebhaftigkeit auf durch Pastellfarben und Unterbrechungen statt Strenge und Trennung.
Das die ganze Zeit in Dauerschleife deutlich wahrnehmbar der von Mondrian geliebte Jazz die Räumlichkeiten beschallt ist für einen Besucher der 1-1,5 Stunden in der Ausstellung verbringt nicht weiter störend - ob die Aufsichtspersonen nach 8 Stunden in den rund 100 Tagen Dauer der Ausstellung das auch so sieht ist abzuwarten.

Her skal ikke anmeldes selve kunstsamlingen i Nordrhein-Westfalen men derimod huset til samlingen kaldet K21.
Det er ganske interessant ved at være opført fra 1876 i historicistisk renæssancestil, senere noget beskadiget under WW2 men ret hurtigt genopført og husede delstatens parlament fra 1949 til 1988. Herefter stod det tomt i 14 år indtil det blev en del af det samlede kompleks for kunstsamlingen, og som i tidens løb har fået en meget international vinkel i hovedsagelig modernismen startende med en start af et stort opkøb af Paul Klee ´s værker.
Smukt ligger bygningen ud til en sø.

Zowel gebouw als collectie zijn prachtig. Jammer genoeg kwamen we net tussen twee expo's in op bezoek, waardoor we alleen de vaste expo hebben kunnen zien, maar deze is mede door de manier waarop de zalen zijn ingericht zeer de moeite waard!

Was wir hier zu sehen bekamen , sprengt fast den Rahmen.Mit 2h haben wir ungefähr gerechnet , aber man braucht doch wesentlich länger , um all die schönen Dinge auf sich wirken zu lassen.Eine der schönsten Sammlungen , welche ich bis jetzt gesehen habe!

Now this exhibition with paintings made by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a special one. The artist, a daughter from parents born in Ghana, has developed expert skills of painting, as based upon learning from pioneers in former times. One can recognise that Lynette Yiadom-Boakye must have looked at Rembrandt, Singer-Sargent, as well as Goya and other old 'Masters”. Information from other reviews tell 'also at historic family portraits'.
The often imaginated people as portrait or figure(s) are placed in context, whereby the artist uses color and darkness / lightness of background as important, support. There is history, as influenced by her background. There is an eye that exposes thought, experience and emotion of people portrayed. Yes, all figures are black. Which is a normality, unusal for white people, like the author of this review. Like many, his experience is tainted by collections in museums of the Western World, where mostly white people feature in paintings. Yet, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye convinces open-minded spectators by the self evidency of the scenes and roles of the characters she depicts. Class.

We visited for a particular exhibition which was great. After that we took a trip around the permanent exhibition which is truly wonderful; assuming you like modern art of course. We didn't even get to see everything on show as we ran out of time. For instance, I didn't see a single Paul Klee, for which the museum is famous...
But if you want to wander through all the various movements, trends, groups and collectives of the last 120 years then K-20 and K-21 are a good place to go. All the top names are present; you won't be disappointed.

I visited both K20 and K21, using the combined ticket. Both buildings themselves are of interesting design and worth a look from the inside and outside. As for the art collections, they are unique. I personally am not a fan of modern art - I find much of it creepy and it makes me feel not that good. That being said, looking at my visit from an objective point of view, both museums are indeed world-class and a must for any art fan. There are pieces from many famous names over the last century.

Situé pas très loin de la Burgplatz et des rives du Rhin, ce musée d’art moderne présente des collections permanentes de qualité avec des peintres comme Dali, Picasso, Modigliani. Moitié prix avec la Düsseldorf Card.

Note that there are two buildings. K20 Grabbeplatz is at the Heinrich-Heine Allee stop, K21 Ständehaus is at the Graf-Adolf-Platz stop. There's a free shuttle bus to go from one to the other, though it is a pleasant walk if the weather is good.
