I just got back from the Ainsa / Tremp combined trip and loved it. The riding was spectacular. Very flowy trails, especially in Tremp. The guiding was spot on and they set up each day perfectly with just the right amount of riding and the right difficulty. Ainsa was more rocky but still a lot of singletrack and flow / jumps. All in all it was a great trip and I would highly recommend.

Typically, when I book an activity while traveling, I experience something that feels like a somewhat generic and impersonal tourist activity (even if it's super fun). So when we met up with Doug and Antonio, I was blown away by how my family was treated to a killer day of riding and hanging out in Basque country.
It is important to note that my family has varying interests, experiences, and passions for riding. We range in age from preteen to AARP-eligible, and not everyone in the family shares my excitement about riding technical trails as often as possible.
I'm also a little bit of a gear head, so I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the rental bikes provided.
Doug and Antonio were the consummate hosts. They surveyed the family in advance to understand our (self-reported) skill level and taste in trails. We were set up with very well-equipped Orbea Occams, and they provided trail options that everyone in the family was excited about. My wife wanted to ride near the water (check), my daughter was hoping for sweeping views (check), and my son wanted long steep descents (check, check).
BasqueMTB has a super solid shuttle setup that is comfortable, spacious, and safe. We were able to cover a lot of ground in a limited amount of time, and I loved not having to worry about navigating to the trailhead or trying to coax my 12-year-old up a long climb.
We broke up the day with a lunch stop in a small village, where we refueled and plotted our course for the afternoon. The experience was fantastic, and I'm confident that we could not have replicated this part of our journey without BasqueMTB's guidance.
What would I change about my time with BasqueMTB? Only one thing- I needed way more time riding and hanging out with the team. I can't wait to go back for a week or more.
This was the best time I've had with any type of guide service. If you have the opportunity to ride with Doug and his team, take it.

Of the 14 people in our two riding groups 7 had been before and 5 of them more than 5 times! Sounds like an exaggeration but all true. Really, says it all.
I went in early May 2023, and I am planning to go back in September.
We did the “Low Pyrenees” trip, it was extremely physical, you need a full suspension bike with at least 150mm travel front and back, ideally 170mm front 160mm rear. Routes were rocky. Ideally carry 1.5 litres of water (you refill at van) Ideally you want a full-face helmet and at least knee and elbow pads, a couple had body armour. You get four uplifts a day, two before lunch and two after, if you need a break (a couple did) you can skip a ride in the van. The inclusive hotels and food were very clean and good with large meals. For this trip we changed hotel every two days which was quite demanding but allowed us to pick the best of a very wide range of mountains, they do also offer one hotel trips. We had four guides on rotation for our two groups of 7 which was plenty. The team, support and level of professionalism were excellent and good bike maintenance support.
Average uplift/ride, uplift up fire road in a 4x4 van with bike trailer as high as they can go then cycle up the last 1,000 feet. Meet at top of route, receive a brief basic description of what is ahead, warning of which way to go at crossroads. Off you go with one guide ahead and one behind, no one got lost. Start above the snow line and ride to the lowest valley in one hit.
Ideally you need an ability to do any black runs at any UK bike park. Be physically fit (able to climb average 3,000 feet of climbing a day) and brave with a spare derailleur hanger.
Other people on the groups were also very inclusive and fun. The average riders were aged thirties and up to fit mid-fifties, we had American Dutch and English. With very high to upper mix skill levels, we had an ex-national enduro champ, ex Mega Avalanche riders, MOAB riders and enthusiasts. All loved it, all going again.
I would also recommend a transfer day/night in San Sebastian at either end, picturesque town with incredible food.

This is everything you could ask for in a mountain bike trip.
Stunning scenery, epic trails and the most civilised of guiding. The riding is big and pushes you to the limits of your ability but is all rideable for the regular trail rider.
Every day was a brilliant combination of authentic rural basque and aragonese food, accommodation and welcome. Always the option of a cold beer to end the day, evolving scenery and locations to help savour this amazing place.
Doug's organisation is exceptional and very client focussed - it was truly all about us.
The guides are all local and very experienced. They were sympathetic to differing skill sets, changes in energy levels in the group and trail conditions, and all really lovely people.
Antonio, Enaut, Jorge and Zumai - thank you all very much for your superb temperaments, considerate, safe and efficient guiding and above all for providing the environment for the very best of trips.
I will of course be back....🤩

BasqueMTB is a world class operation. Doug, his team, and his partners are so good at what they do. The scenery and biking was simply spectacular. Unfortunately, we had some bad luck with weather but Doug and his team are so nimble. Even though I know itinerary changes were made, it always felt like we were riding plan A. They were constantly monitoring the weather and trail conditions, looking forward and making changes to keep us on incredible trails riding all day. I was also so impressed with how quickly and confidently they got a gal in our group medical care when she required an x-ray for a dislocation. Doug and his team are ready for anything which gives clients the opportunity to ride with confidence, not worry about the details, and focus fully on blissful biking. The days were long with plenty of biking, adventure, great food, good technical coaching and awesome company. I became a better biker, met new friends, and developed a serious lasting love for Spain. I look forward to many more trips with BasqueMTB.

This was a great trip - well organised, really good value and most importantly amazing fun.
The Basque country is maybe not the first place you think of for a riding holiday and it's a very different experience to the charlifted experience in the Alps, but the variety of trails that Doug and his team of first class guides will show you explains why these guys get such good reviews. All the things that they can control are first class - great guides who are super friendly, helpful, experienced and understand the balance between fun and safety and then a team that wants you to experience and enjoy this unique region. The stuff that can't control like the weather, people's riding ability and the mechanicals and other stuff that happens as part of mountain biking they deal with brilliantly. The trails are great fun, but it's all the other stuff that makes it a great holiday.

Basque MTB plans excellent trips that really accommodate the riders. Their guides were excellent and so fun. Couldn’t have asked for a better guide experience.

Basque MTB have cracked the magic formula of great MTB guiding. The knowledge, skill and judgement of Doug and his team were all spot on, enabling us as an experienced group of friends to get on with enjoying the trails, whatever the Basque weather threw at us.

This was a great experience. We had 5 days riding many different locations in the Basque country, from an hour or so inland, to right along the coast along a "Camino" (de Santiago I think) into San Sebastian. Our guides were fun, patient, excellent riders and overall just awesome people, it was really great to hang out with them. The accommodation was pretty nice too, great view of Hondabarria, comfy beds, a tasty plentiful breakfast and a great garden to hang out in and chat with new found mountain biking friends. The wifi could have been better (poor signal) but hell, sometimes its better to not be on line all the time when on vacation. Logistically, everything was pretty smooth, from getting bikes and riders loaded in the van, to determining how, if and when to split the groups into 2 groups so that everyone got what they wanted out of the riding. I also rented a bike and it was a high quality Oreeba trail bike that was well tuned for me (ie correct sag, brake levers in my preferred orientation, etc.). It slayed the climbing and was more than capable for the techy stuff too. The riding was in places a bit challenging for me, but thats what I like to have on a trip with guides. I did have a few opportunities to be "towed in" on some lines, which was awesome since I would never normally ride features and tech that I did. Its a really great feeling to achieve the same flow that the guides had on these trails. The locations and the scenery of the trails was just gorgeous too, from high mountainous terrain, to deep forest, beautiful rolling hills to rugged cliffs by the sea. One thing to think about though, these trails were not "flowy". I did read a few reviews where the writers described sections of the trail as flowy for 8 Km back to the van, or just "rocky and rooty enough to keep it interesting" for long sections. I guess either Im just not that good of a rider (and neither then was the entire rest of the group) or maybe there was some exaggeration of the flowy nature of the trails. Personally, I would say only about 10-15% of all the trail distance we rode could be described as flowy, the rest was a mixture of non flowy but pretty ridable tech, hikeabike, non technical climbing, and challenging chutes, steep switch backs, or rock/root gardens. We also had some wet conditions which made for some challenging spots too. To be fair to Doug the owner, when we were in the process of booking, he did warn me that the trails might not be what I was used to but even so with the reviews and videos I wasnt quite expecting it be as rugged as it was. In the end it didnt really deter from the experience, my wife and I had a great time, met some great people, and shredded some gnarly lines :) Oh and one more thing, strolling along the waterfront in Hondabarria in the evening along with half the town going for Pintxos and Txacoli was a delight, what a fantastic culture of food and drink the Basque have. Enjoy !!!

Can we just rent the bikes and go on ourselves?
เขียนเมื่อ 27 มิถุนายน 2019
Hi Mike, thanks for the questions. I´m afraid that we don´t rent bikes without guides. I explain the reasons for that in quite a bit of detail on the website under Bike Hire.

I am wondering how much technical riding you have done. Are you quite skilled or a beginner or somewhere in between?

My husband and I went for three days with BasqueMTB. We are both intermediate riders, but my sense of Douglas is that he will choose rides that work for anyone. I would suggest emailing him (he is great at responding) and asking about trails. We booked private days so that we could ride the trails we wanted and didn't have to be in a group. It was a great price and the best days!
