Cabrera
Cabrera is the name of the Archepelago that lies about 15 km (10 mi) from the southern tip of Mallorca. It's a national park that is made up of less than twenty small Islands. Free access is not allowed, but nice trips can be booked.
Mission
My own mission was to take photos of migrant and resident birds of the main island (Cabrera Gran). Other participant had other priorities, like snorkeling, swimming, hiking, admiring the fantastic views, etc, - or just lie on the sunny beach.
Guide
Our guide was Miguel McMinn from Balearic Shearwater Tours. He is able to unveil all the secrets of local shearwaters, and also those of other birds. Ecotourism is close to his heart. He can instruct you how to help in protection of those precious birds with their conservation through the charity Association for the Conservation of the Balearic Shearwater.
Transport
The excursions started at 10:00 from the harbour of Colònia Sant Jordi. We had a stable 10-passenger motorboat with two powerful Suzuki 175 engines and a nice Captain. The trip itself takes about 30 min, but we enjoyed the most beautiful views to clear water and calm bays and caves with a reduced speed. I also took some photos from the boat. The home journey started at 17:00. We had an opportunity to see different parts of Cabrera Islands. Some of us did cave snorkeling and swimming.
Geography
Cabrera is well represented in appropriate Web pages, and I will not reiterate thinks here. The scientists' (bird ringing etc) house and a huge "tag" or herald on a hillside were noted. An endemic bluish Lilford's Wall Lizard is cute and seen everywhere.
Bird watching
I enjoyed my private bird photographing while others went to other activities with Miguel. The weather was half-clouded and there was a good amount of light to take pictures. On the way to the islands we saw European Shags, an Osprey and even several Scopoli's Shearwaters. An old (over 100 years?) Osprey nest was nicely visible as was a lonely Peregrine Falcon. In the valley of main island several species displaced themselves. Many of the birds were migrants. A good amount of them were feeding on the fig trees. I had a good view, for instance, of Blue Rock Thrush, Common Redstarts, Whinchats, various Warblers and Pipits. Some birds, like Golden Orioles and Yellow Wagtails, were visible but too fast for me to take photos, - this time (?).
Conclusions
My trips to Cabrera were very impressive: exceptional nature, nice co-travellers and an excellent guide. I would highly recommend.
