This circus of Tarragona was once used to hold horse and chariot races.
The complex was built in the 1st century. It is an elongated structure measuring 325 by 115 meters. The original capacity has been estimated at 30,000 spectators.
A big part of the original structure remains hidden under old 19th-century buildings. The painting on the wall shows the original structure.

I really enjoyed this visit.. lots to see and masses of history to read about and listen to, and the view from the top is easily the best view in Tarragona.. forget about the Mediterranean balcony..if I remember it was 5 euros to get in..for that price you get a lot..

Superbes vestiges du cirque romain, même si on ne voit plus grand chose de son exterieur. La partie avec les tunnels d'accès est tout simplement magnifique.
On continue la visite par la tour (bien plus récente) qui offre un panarama 360 sur la ville.

Built under Emperor Domitian towards the end of the 1st century CE it is a vast games extent. Horse racing and other races took place in front of spectators numbering around twenty thousand. It continued to host games until the 5th century.
We are fortunate that it is so well preserved. Walking around some of the excavated circuits is testament to its size in its heyday.
Many artefacts from the time are displayed. Statuary, sarcophagi and other funerary items are great; a funerary stela has a legend known as the Eutyches Inscriptions.
Ascending to the top level we had tremendous vistas over the city including fine panoramas of the Cathedral.

Entrance €3.30. Ask about the ‘combination’ ticket if you are visiting other historical sites. In all the historical sites only credit cards accepted for entrance, no cash.
Only a fragment of the circus remains, but there are several hundred meters of galleries which are great to explore. There are lots of small rooms off the galleries which you can imagine being the bases for the various factions competing in the races or for dignitaries being entertained- rather like the directors boxes ar a modern football match.

Visita interesante y agradable. La información es algo deficiente. Buena conservación, vale la pena. La atención muy justa. No admiten pago en efectivo, solo con tarjeta de crédito, COSA QUE ES ILEGAL.

Reste du cirque Romain, dont la particularité était d'étre dans le centre ville, une partie reste à découvrir. Manque d'explication malgré le petit facicule remis à l'entrée. Reste une visite interressante.
