Can we move the Guernica to a decent museum?

The Guernica is truly something special and if you enjoy surrealism, you are in for a treat. However, I was not satisfied with the museum experience at all. Staff was rude and mostly occupied with sitting in a corner and jumping up (3 at the same time) to tell me I was illegally entering a room via an exit - which I truly could not have noticed, as navigation through the building is a disaster with lack of signs, logic, natural flow or paper plans. When entering the museum, I had no idea which way to go to find any art and asking staff didn't help much. Another major problem I had is the complete insufficiency of providing any context or explanation about the art works. At points, it felt like it was expected visitors had a Master's degree in surrealism, Spanish civil war history, and the Spanish language. I could make head nor tail of the titles given to certain rooms or expositions and the audio guide only explained about ~20 paintings; there barely was any written information. I am sure there has been a certain idea (chronology, probably) when this all was curated, but I could not figure it out and spend a good deal of my visit on Google. This also pertains to the Guernica: highly disappointing, the way it was presented. This deserved so much more, with more sketches, more explanation, and a more dedicated room - and how about a bench somewhere to observe, anywhere really!?

It's as if this museum has been designed to make the visitor experience as unpleasant as possible. There is no cafe inside the museum. Cafe Nubel is outside in the courtyard. There is no indication of this. We entered, went through the rigmarole of getting the audio-guide, filling in a form to obtain a folding chair (Why?!) and going through security, only to have to leave the building and give everything back. Audio guides cannot be taken to the cafe. Staff gave conflicting advice. Someone told me there was a restaurant on the first floor. Another was very rude.
The situation did not improve once we were viewing the collection. Lack of signage, and a labyrinth lay-out made it difficult to find basic facilities like toilets and the art-works themselves. There are no seats in the galleries, and bench seats in the corridors are cold and uncomfortable.
One of the worst experiences I've had in any museum for a long time.

Introducción
Si te gusta el arte contemporáneo, no puedes perderte el Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, uno de los museos más prestigiosos de Madrid y de España. Se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad, cerca de la estación de Atocha. Abre de lunes a sábado de 10:00 a 21:00 y los domingos de 10:00 a 19:00. La entrada general vale 10 euros, pero hay días y horas en los que se puede entrar gratis, como los lunes, miércoles y sábados de 19:00 a 21:00 y los domingos de 13:30 a 19:00.

Colección permanente
El Reina Sofía tiene la mejor colección de arte contemporáneo de Madrid. La colección cubre desde principios del s. XX hasta los años ochenta. Algunas de las obras y artistas más sobresalientes son:

“Guernica”, de Picasso: Considerada por algunos la obra de arte más importante del S. XX, el Guernica de Pablo Picasso es un símbolo del estilo cubista que hizo famoso a su autor. Es una protesta contra los horrores de la guerra, inspirada en el bombardeo de la ciudad vasca de Guernica en 1937. Es posible pasar horas analizando el cuadro, pero hay que dedicar tiempo a observar los detalles de sus elementos y alejarse para apreciar una vista general. Para entenderlo mejor están los bocetos preparatorios realizados por Picasso. Se encuentran en las salas que rodean la 206 y permiten ver su proceso creativo.
Salvador Dalí: El Reina Sofía tiene una veintena de óleos de Dalí, el genio del surrealismo. Uno de los más famosos es El gran masturbador, toda una rareza surrealista tan desconcertante como atractiva. También llama la atención una extraña cabeza de una tal Joella esculpida por Dalí y su amigo Man Ray.
Joan Miró: En la obra del barcelonés Joan Miró predominan los colores primarios. Después de que sus pinturas se convirtieran en símbolo de las Olimpiadas de Barcelona, en 1992, su obra empezó a recibir el reconocimiento internacional que se merecía. Este museo es un buen lugar para ver una muestra representativa de su estilo innovador.
Otros maestros cubistas: Se dice que Picasso se inspiró en las máscaras africanas tradicionales y esa influencia también se observa en los cuadros del madrileño Juan Gris y de Georges Braque, dos maestros del cubismo.
Arte español contemporáneo: El Reina Sofía es una oportunidad para acercarse a artistas españoles del S.XX menos conocidos, como el mallorquín Miguel Barceló, el madrileño José Gutiérrez Solana y el manchego Benjamín Palencia, cuyos cuadros reflejan la turbulenta España de la década de 1930. El pintor barcelonés Antoni Tápies, durante años uno de los talentos más creativos de España, también está representado, así como el pop art del madrileño Eduardo Arroyo, pintores abstractos como el alicantino Eusebio Sempere y miembros del equipo 57, que incluye al madrileño Pablo Palazuelo.
Esculturas: En este género destacan los bronces del zaragozano Pablo Gargallo, incluido un busto de Picasso, y los prestigiosos escultores vascos Jorge Oteiza y Eduardo Chillida. Las piezas de este último, de hierro oxidado, son unas de las formas más enigmáticas del arte español.
Exposiciones temporales
El Reina Sofía también ofrece exposiciones temporales de gran interés y calidad. Durante mi visita pude ver las siguientes:

“La invención del siglo XX. Carl Einstein y las vanguardias”: Esta exposición muestra la obra y el pensamiento de Carl Einstein, un crítico de arte y escritor alemán que tuvo una gran influencia en las vanguardias del siglo XX. La exposición reúne más de 100 obras de artistas como Picasso, Braque, Gris, Léger, Matisse, Klee, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Malevich, Duchamp, Dalí, Miró y muchos otros. La exposición se encuentra en el edificio Sabatini, planta 3, y estará abierta hasta el 16 de enero de 2024.
“La persistencia de la memoria. El arte de la memoria desde el Renacimiento hasta nuestros días”: Esta exposición explora la relación entre el arte y la memoria, desde el Renacimiento hasta la actualidad. La exposición muestra cómo los artistas han utilizado diferentes técnicas y recursos para crear, conservar y transmitir la memoria, tanto individual como colectiva. La exposición incluye obras de artistas como Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya, Manet, Van Gogh, Magritte, Warhol, Beuys, Boltanski y muchos otros. La exposición se encuentra en el edificio Nouvel, planta 1, y estará abierta hasta el 27 de febrero de 2024.
Edificio y servicios
Aparte de su colección, el Reina Sofía nació de la reforma de un hospital del siglo XVIII. El edificio original, llamado Sabatini, conserva su estructura de claustros y patios, que contrasta con las salas modernas y luminosas donde se exhiben las obras. La ampliación, realizada por el arquitecto francés Jean Nouvel, se extiende por la parte oeste de la Plaza del Emperador Carlos V y alberga exposiciones temporales, auditorios, la librería, un café y la biblioteca del museo. El edificio Nouvel se caracteriza por su fachada roja y su cubierta metálica, que crea un juego de luces y sombras. Entre los dos edificios se encuentra el jardín vertical diseñado por Patrick Blanc, que aporta un toque de naturaleza al conjunto.

Après une demi heure de file, accès libre (12€pp) au musée avec une heure fixe de rendez-vous 2 heures plus tard pour voir l'expo "Picasso 1906 la Grande Transformation".
Le 4ème étage : intéressant (Miro, Picasso, Dali, Magritte....)
Le 3ème : l'assassinat de Isaac Rabin
Le 2ème : Guernica .... et l'évolution de la peinture de Picasso

le musee est bq trop grand pour ne pas faire une visiste guidee....il n'y a quasiement aucune explication. les audio guides sont d'une qualite lamentable. bref vraiment dommage. mention soecial oour les acces pour personne a mobilite reduites ( aller absolument partout) et la proprete et disponibilite des toilettes.

The building itself is quite nice and has a beautiful almost empty inner courtyard with many benches and some sculptures.
The main attraction is Picasso’s Guernica but there are numerous other works by Picasso, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro and Calder.
They had a temporary Picasso exhibit which was wonderful.
Well worth a visit

Museo molto bello e ricco di opere di pittori dell’arte contemporanea. Ho adorato vedere finalmente il Guernica di Picasso, che mi immaginavo molto più piccolo, invece è gigantesco. Le opere di Dali’ fantastiche!!!!! Miro’, anche se lo comprendo poco, mi è piaciuto poter vedere le sue opere. Lo consiglio a chi ama l’arte contemporanea ma anche a chi ha voglia di immergersi, per una volta, nell’astratto.
