Carlos II or King Charles II reigned from 1861b-1700 becoming king at the age of 3. He was know for his physical disabilities and although married twice produced no heir. The statue in the square at Sol is an interesting one and worthy of a look.

This is a lovely monument of Carlos III, located in the middle of Sol square.
The monument provides several photo-ops with the lovely surrounding buildings serving as a backdrop.

This striking equestrian statue is located in the center of Puerta del Sol, in front of the Casa de Correos. Behind him are Hotel Europa and the famous Tio Pepe ad. Although the bronze statue looks like an antique, it was created just in 1993.
The City Council wanted to honor the king who is known as the best mayor of Madrid due to the improvements that the city underwent during his reign. Carlos III reigned Spain between 1759 and 1788.
During his reign, some of the most emblematic buildings and monuments of Madrid arose: the Prado Museum, the Cibeles, Neptune and Apollo fountains on Paseo del Prado, and Puerta de Alcala, etc.

No es gran cosa, pero se encuentra en plena puerta del Sol. El monumento está en el centro de la plaza y para los argentinos es casi como la típica escultura de san martín.

Kung Carlos III föddes 1716 i Madrid och var kung i Spanien under åren 1759-88. Hans största ambition var att reformera Spanien till att åter bli en supermakt. Inom utrikespolitiken lyckades han inget vidare, men inrikes gick det bättre efter en rad ekonomiska reformer och han införde också ett modernt administrativt system. Det fick så bra, att kungen blev känd som ”den bästa borgmästaren i Madrid" och i början av 1990-talet beslutades att resa ett monument, en ryttarstaty, till hans ära.
Som modell användes en liten skulptur som Juan Pascual de Mena gjorde över Carlos far, Felipe V, man behövde bara byta ut huvudet. Efter att en folkomröstning bestämt var statyn skulle stå placerades den ut på Puerta del Sol i december 1994.
Monumentet är nio meter högt och består av en hög sockel av kalksten som står på en bas av granit. Själva statyn är gjuten i brons och väger 2,8 ton. Runt sockeln löper en 12 rader hög text som beskriver Coros III:s regeringstid. Ett imponerande monument, särskilt om man sätter sig in lite i historien bakom den här omtyckte kungen.
