There are two sarcophagi in Piazza del Popolo, one leaning against the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo and the other attached to the Carabinieri barracks, which were once the barracks of the papal guards.
The strigilated sarcophagus leaning against the Carabinieri barracks dates back to the second half of the third century A.C. and was placed here in the works of re-arrangement of the square in the nineteenth century and it is accessed by climbing a few steps.
In the center is a man wearing a toga and on the sides, as a further ornament, there are two children with their eyes turned towards the center.
On the wall there are two spouts that pour drinking water into the ancient tub.
This is example, and there are many in Rome, of a use of archaeological elements, with purposes different from the original ones.
Apart from the fact that these small fountains are of public utility because they offer pure and fresh water to thousands of tourists who crowd the square, it must be added that they are not maintained in the best of ways.
In fact, all around there is dirt, beer cans and empty bottles that spoil its appearance.
It needs attention and maintenance.

Appena varcata la Porta Flaminia, agli angoli dei 2 edifici a lato della stessa (quello di dx ospita la caserma dei carabinieri "Giacomo Acqua", quello di sx il museo "Leonardo Da Vinci"), sulle pareti che "guardano" verso la piazza, si potranno trovare queste 2 fontane, che altrimenti ad un osservatore distratto potrebbero sfuggire, considerata la loro semplicità: sono costituite infatti da ordinarie cannelle di ferro che versano l'acqua in una sottostante vasca.
Quest'ultima è però costituita, in entrambe le fontane, da sarcofagi in marmo con il fronte decorato di età imperiale (III° secolo) e poi l'acqua è che sgorga dalle fontane è fresca e potabile.
La realizzazione di entrambe le fontane risalgono alla sistemazione ottocentesca della piazza da parte del Valadier.
Quest'ultima è però costituita, in entrambe le fontane, da sarcofagi in marmo con il fronte decorato di età imperiale (III° secolo) e poi l'acqua è che sgorga dalle fontane è fresca e potabile.
La realizzazione di entrambe le fontane risalgono alla sistemazione ottocentesca della piazza da parte del Valadier.

Non sono le prime fontane sotto le quali e situato un sarcofago come contenitore dell'acqua. Queste si trovano nella grande piazza del Popolo (non cosi evidenti), ne ho viste di più importanti dal vista architettonico girando per la città. Da vedere quando passate in zona.

Queste due fontane, sono parte dell’arredo decorativo dello spazio e ne completano l'assetto definitivo disegnato dal Valadier.
In verità, davanti a questa bellezza che cattura subito l’attenzione, solo chi ha una visione periferica percepisce nel complesso la piazza.
I due sarcofagi che pochi notano si trovano entrambi ai lati della grande Porta, uno addossato alla chiesa di Santa Maria del Popolo, l’altro sul lato opposto, lungo le mura della caserma, un tempo delle guardie pontificie.
Il primo reca scolpita l’immagine di due coniugi in un clipeo, l’altro raffigura un personaggio maschile togato.
Entrambi sono manufatti antichissimi.
In verità, davanti a questa bellezza che cattura subito l’attenzione, solo chi ha una visione periferica percepisce nel complesso la piazza.

ポポロ広場からポポロ門を正面に見ると、すぐ左側の教会の右端にある噴水です。壁の片隅に張り付くようにしてあるこじんまりとした噴水なので、近くを通っても気に止めずに通り過ぎてしまうかもしれません。噴水は全体に模様が施されていて、中央部分には人物像が彫られています。

ポポロ広場の北側にある石棺の噴水は対になって二ヶ所にあります。広場からポポロ門を正面に見て、中央のポポロ門に通ずる通りの両サイドに建っている建物の下にひとつづつあり、石棺には建物の壁から出ている蛇口がふたつそれぞれについています。訪れた時は、左側の石棺の蛇口からは水が出てませんでしたが、右側の石棺の蛇口からは勢いよく水が出ていました。石棺にはレリーフが施され、右側は男女で夫婦らしいレリーフが中央に、左側はひとりの男性のレリーフが同じく真ん中に刻まれています。ポポロ広場の中央にある四頭のライオンの噴水と同じジュゼッペ・ヴァラディエールがこれを造ったようです。

É vero che si trova in Piazzq del Popolo ma non si nota proprio e non vi è neanche un insegna a segnalarla. Venendo da piazzale flaminio dovete oltrepassare porta Flaminia, poco prima della strada che costeggia Piazza del Popolo subito a destra, è proprio sotto il Palazzo del Comando Legione Carabinieri Lazio

Located in the northern section of Piazza del Popola, is two small sarcophagus fountains, one tucked in the side of the Leonardo Davinci museum building (which is currently covered in scaffold, however you can still get to the fountain) and the other on the opposite side, within the wall of the cabernari (police) station. Probably not stand alone attractions, however they are dated back to the 3rd century, for that reason alone worth a look.
