We have walked many times just along the street on which the church is located and never noticed it, because it is sandwiched between residential buildings.
It is not a church that has its own space and it is isolated from the urban context.
One day we were a little curious while we were in Via Germanico and we saw from a distance the silhouette of a bell tower and a dome .
We approached and noticed a small door with a round gable above, containing a small mosaic depicting the Madonna enthroned wit the Child.
It was the entrance to the convent but also a secondary access to the church.
The Church of Santa Maria del Rosario in Prati was built at the beginning of the 20th century and completed between 1912 and 1916 in neo-gothic style by the architect Giuseppe Ribaldi.
The interior has three naves divided by pillars and five arches. The interior paintings are by Giovan Battista Conti.
It has been the seat of a parish since 1912 and is entrusted to the Dominican Fathers.
The church also has value in urban planning because, like other churches in the district and in the contiguous Trionfale district (partly contemporary), it is proof of an anti-clerical tendency widespread at the end of the nineteenth century in the newly created Italian state that wanted, in contrast to the Vatican, minimize the importance of places of worship, assigning them any building lot in the neighborhoods under construction on even secondary roads and not, as one would expect, a lot overlooking the main street of the neighborhood (for example via Ottaviano).
Initially the community of Dominican friars resided in Monte Mario in a church that had its origins around 1651.
In 1912, with the help of Pope Pius X, the construction works were started and they ended with the inauguration in June 1916.
The entrance to the church, which overlooks the street, is protected by a wrought iron gate. The façade
has a rose window with a mosaic in the lunette.
The interior has three naves divided by pillars and five arches.
On the apse altar there is a triptych depicting the Madonna of the Rosary.
The apse is embellished with three polychrome windows that create suggestive light effects.
In the counter-façade you can admire a mosaic depicting the Madonna of Pompeii and a fresco with the Tree of Mary's prophecies.
The entrance is in via degli Scipioni, so it is also very easy to get there, given the proximity to the "Ottaviano" Metro A stop.
It is special place.
Recommended.
