It's said that "all roads lead to Rome;' the Apian Way leads to the city of Rome from Brindisi, in the heel in Italy's South. The length of the road is 350 miles (563 km). There are areas of the Appian Way you can walk; you will be amazed by the quality of this ancient road.

Passeggiare su via Appia Antica, a Roma, è sempre sorprendente e nello stesso tempo affascinante.

Our tour didn't show us much of the road that the photos that this site shows. It was my second go at finding those old structures . Obviously I’ll never get to see them! The tour guide said something about the bus not being able to go down the road that leads into the Appian Way.
After the catacomb visit, we walked a bit and saw the beginning of the road. She showed us the cobble stones and then we were turned around. We were very disappointed at that.
But our tour did take us to the Aquaduct. It was surprising to see the sports field and joggers. It was a cool thing to do. I’d recommend that part.

if you’re not insane like me and don’t want to walk a lot more than necessary take a bus from the colosseum to the catacombs of saint sebastian and start your walk on the via appia there! (bikes are also an option and the most common one tbh)

Family of 5 and we were sick of walking so we hired e-bikes and explored this area. One of the kids wasn’t a confident rider and the middle car free road was closed so the cobblestones + cars made it a little stressful 🤭 other two older kids absolutely loved it as one of the best things to do in Rome! Taxi was around 12euro’s far easier than faffing with bus.

This was a really fun way to see the beautiful Appian Way. Massomos is a great guide He was interesting and enthusiastic as he explained every stop. Be aware you will be biking in some traffic a little before arriving at the Appian Way and when you get there the trail is bumpy but still very worthwhile. It shouldn’t be missed I highly recommend

A great find. We did a self guided, own pace walk along the Appian Way.
About a 40 minute walk from Roma, Termini, to one end of the walk. The information centre is quite good and provided us with a couple of maps, one that had information for a self guided tour. (The other was €2).
The path has some gentle hills but is generally flat for the most part.
Many stops along the way, including catacombes, ancient mausoleums, C4 BC building and mosaics. There are also a couple of cafes and bars to stop in at.
We took the bus back to the Metro after about 8km. There is a lot more to explore if you feel up to it.
Great history.
On a Sunday you will only come across people and bikes NO cars allowed.
Highly recommend.

We rented mountain E bikes on a Saturday. One of the best things we did on our trip. A nice break from the noise and chaos of Rome crowds. But recommend you go on Sunday. No cars allowed on Sundays.

Hello! I´d like to know if it´s easy to rent a bike inside de Park or if it´s necessary to book in advance, because I´m going on easter Sunday. If yes, how I may book in advance? (I´m not looking for a tour guide, I´m going by myself).

We would like to go up as far as possible on Via Appia Antica and walk back to Rome. How shall we do this and where shall we begin the walk?
Or do we need to walk from Rome and back?
Thank you

We walked the whole actual stretch of the Via Appia antica from Terme di Caracalla (Rome) to Frattocchie (where it disappears under the new road pavement...) : it’s about 18km of pure pleasure, especially on Sundays when the traffic is reduced ! Enjoy !

I know a Sunday would be the best bet but we've missed that opportunity. Is the weekday traffic very bad for biking with a 9 year old?

Once you get to the Appian Antica there is little traffic. It is too uneven for most cars so only residents use it.
