Uno scrigno nascosto nello splendido contesto di Trastevere, con un sottosuolo ricco di emozioni per la presenza di una domus romana ed una cripta bellissima.
Nella domus ci sono vari reperti di epoca romana con pavimenti ricchi di mosaico e la cripta, restaurata in epoca più recente, è magnifica. È consigliato prenotare per una visita guidata per godere meglio della bellezza del luogo.

St Cecilia’s church, the hidden Roman ruins beneath it and the crypt are one of the highlights if you’re exploring the historic Trastevere area. It’s like three separate sights in one.
1. CHURCH - We started at the church which you enter through a monumental, white marble, Baroque entrance. Surprisingly, a much humbler church and a peaceful, green courtyard lie behind it. Under the altar, a white marble figure of an ethereal St Cecilia lies. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the martyred saint was sleeping peacefully but the story is a lot more chilling than that. This is the position that her body was found in after her death. For a long time her body was missing. She’d had a miserably agonising death in AD 230. Her executioners tried unsuccessfully to kill her in her own home (The Chapel of the Bath, on the right hand side of the church, is said to be where they tried to suffocate her). Having botched the job, they tried to behead her but after 3 sword strokes they were still unsuccessful so they left her on the bloodied scaffold, where she lasted for 3 days before dying. Almost 600 years later her body was found inside the San Callisto catacombs. It was miraculously intact and was transferred to the church. Centuries later during church restorations in 1599 her body was exhumed and was found, still in perfect condition, with a veil wrapped around her hair and her face turned to the ground, with the signs of blood and three wounds on her neck. The sculpture was immediately commissioned to capture the exact position of her body and the sculptor, Carlo Maderno, viewed her body before he created the work. Cecilia was re-buried in the crypt.
2. ROMAN RUINS - Next we went down to the Roman ruins and crypt. It’s not immediately obvious where to go because the stairs are at the back of the tiny gift shop near the front doors. Entry to the church is free but there is a small fee/donation to go underneath the church. It wasn’t clear how much of a donation but we gave a €5 for the two of of us, which I think was enough. It is chilly, gloomy and eerie below. We were the only ones there for most of the time - a very strange feeling. These were only uncovered in 1899. We found ourselves walk over large sections of intact mosaic floors which were over 2000 years old and exploring the remains of the walls and columns of several ancient buildings, dating from the 2nd to the 4th century AD. One of these is thought to have been Cecilia’s house. The remains of a tannery can be seen, with 7 large cylindrical brick tubs built into the ground.
3. CRYPT - Finally towards the back of the underground area, we came to the crypt which was built 1899 to house the the tombs of Cecilia, her husband Valerian, her brother Tibertius and the popes Urban I (222-30) and Lucius I (253-54) which were moved there in the 9th century. After walking through the gloomy Roman ruins, the mosaics decorations here are positively luminescent.
4. FRESCO - There is one more area which it is sometimes possible to see. If the door to the left of the entrance is open, one of the nuns may be able to show you through to see the hidden medieval frescoes by Pietro Cavallini. Sadly, the door was shut when we were there so we were out of luck.

Passeggiando per Trastevere e attraversando stradine che quasi sembrano di campagna si raggiunge questa perla. Si entra in un cortile, che accoglie un monastero, e si ci stacca dal resto della città con i suoi rumori e le sue frenesie. All'interno l'incanto e la meraviglia accompagnano una pace e tranquillità piacevolmente riscoperte.

Scoperta per caso, ho intenzionalmente fatto una lunga camminata fino a Trastevere per visitare questa chiesa.
La visita é stata fantastica e la chiesa é ben tenuta.
Il pezzo forte del complesso é sicuramente la cripta, opera d'arte superba e completamente affrescata.
Prima di accedere alla cripta, è possibile visitare i resti di una domus romana con tanto di mosaici molto ben tenuti.
Assolutamente consigliata.
La visita é stata fantastica e la chiesa é ben tenuta.
Il pezzo forte del complesso é sicuramente la cripta, opera d'arte superba e completamente affrescata.
Prima di accedere alla cripta, è possibile visitare i resti di una domus romana con tanto di mosaici molto ben tenuti.

I don’t have words for how much this meant to me! Incredibly beautiful, fascinating history… even got to witness the nuns singing the liturgy of the hours (very appropriate for the basilica of the patron Saint of musicians)! Can hardly wait to go back; highly recommend if you are interested in history, architecture, music, religion, or horror (read about how she died).

Sono stato in questa chiesa con la mia ragazza in occasione di una vacanza a Roma. La struttura si trova a nella parte bassa di Trastevere. Nel cortile esterno è presente una fontana con panchine molto utili per riposarsi. L'interno, visitabile gratuitamente, è adorato con ricchi affreschi. Durante la nostra visita un organista suonava musiche religiose rendendo l'atmosfera molto sacra. Una chiesa da visitare se si passa per la zona.

Esta iglesia, algo separada del centro del Trastevere, supone una visita agradable que empieza por el patio exterior lleno de calma. La iglesia es interesante como lo son la historia de Santa Cecilia y las excavaciones arqueológicas.

E' una delle perle di Trastevere che, a giudicare dai pochi visitatori e anche dalle esigue recensioni qui su Trip, non viene considerata come meriterebbe. La chiesa è preceduta, e di fatto nascosta, da un monumentale ingresso settecentesco che dà accesso al piccolo e curato giardino con al centro un antico cantaro. Nella parte esterna risaltano il pregevole campanile romanico del se. XII e il portico con colonne antiche. L'interno, oltre ai meravigliosi mosaici, conserva il ciborio di Arnolfo di Cambio, autentico capolavoro gotico, e la S. Cecilia di Stefano Maderno che ritrasse il corpo così come fu trovato all'atto della ricognizione. Consiglio di non perdere la visita del complesso archeologico di epoca romana nei sotterranei, visitabile al costo di 2,5 euro. Le prime stanze dove sono visibili, tra l'altro, silos circolari, resti di rilievi e pavimento a mosaico, precedono la splendida cripta bizantineggiante.

What a gem of a church. Of course, there is the legend of Santa Cecelia and the beautiful statue carved of her. But, what did it for me was the unbelievably spectacular mosaics (one of the lovely nuns turned on the lights so we could see them). Don't miss this cool, lovely 5th century church.

La Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere è collocata nell’omonima piazza, nel popolarissimo quartiere di Trastevere; si dice che sorga dove si trovava la casa della Santa, dove essa subì il martirio nel III secolo d.C..
Nella cripta è conservato il corpo della martire, che venne ritrovato nelle catacombe di San Callisto, ove era stato sepolto nel luogo destinato ai vescovi dopo il suo martirio, e riportato nella sua vecchia casa, sulla quale per volere del Papa venne costruita la chiesa, consacrata sul finire del I secolo. Sul finire del XVI secolo il corpo fu rinvenuto, vestito con vesti bianche e miracolosamente intatto, quando il sepolcro venne aperto in occasione di lavori di ristrutturazione, e divenne il soggetto di una splendida scultura di Stefano Maderno, esposta in corrispondenza dell’altare maggiore, che ritrasse fedelmente l’eccezionale ritrovamento.
Nel tempo la basilica fu sede di diversi ordini monastici, che si susseguirono nei secoli; ciò fino alla prima metà del XVI secolo, quando divenne dimora delle monache benedettine di Santa Cecilia, presenti tuttora.
La chiesa ha subito nel tempo numerosissime modifiche, abbellimenti, ed implementazioni, oltre a ristrutturazioni e restauri, grazie ai quali ancor oggi ci è permesso di ammirarne la bellezza e di apprezzarne la suggestione; l’aspetto monumentale e molto scenografico dell’esterno è frutto di una sistemazione avvenuta agli inizi del ‘700.
All’interno, in prossimità dell’altare maggiore, sono concentrati i maggiori capolavori ospitati dalla basilica: la volta dell’abside realizzata in mosaico, col Cristo benedicente ed uno stuolo di Santi, lo splendido ciborio gotico, realizzato da Arnolfo di Cambio, e la già menzionata statua di Santa Cecilia.
Sotto l’altare, molto suggestiva la cripta, cui si accede da un locale nei pressi dell’ingresso, con l’acquisto di un biglietto; raggiunto il sotterraneo, si percorre un lungo corridoio, che segue la pianta della chiesa fino a raggiungere la suggestiva cripta, che mostra le pareti costellate di mosaici e gli elaborati soffitti.
Santa Cecilia è ricordata e venerata anche come patrona e protettrice dei musicisti.

Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is free to visit. Santa Maria where the museum is costs but not much. In general, Europeans over 65 pay the same as adults. There is no more discount for over 65s unless you are resident in Rome.

Hello,
If we plan on attending Mass Sunday at St Cecilia's next July, will we be able to see the frescos as well as go underground to see Early Roman living quarter's of St. Cecilia? There was reference that tours were during the week but no mention as to whether we could visit these after or before Sunday mass. We are trying to decide where to go to Sunday mass, but only have 3 days in Rome so would like to make the most of our time. Thank you for your response and any other suggestions! :)

The beautiful fresco can be seen before 12 pm and after 2:30 pm as to go you have to ring at the nun's house and they have lunch between 12 and 2:30.
I suggest a wonderful tour which can be guided and it's also in English in Domus romanae in Palazzo Valentini . It's close to the wonderful Traiano column and Ara pacis which is a area you can't miss. Book on line the tickets 14 euros each and go 10 min before . Book a good restaurant called Matricianella close to via del Corso and 10 min walk max from piazza di Spagna. For a magnificent dinner book L' Arcangelo it 20 min walk max from via des Corso and serves amazing food all fresh and around 40 euros . It's like a step up from a trattoria ,not elegant but simple . Matricianella is a real trattoria great it's fritti and pasta. The chiesa del Cristo not far from Ara pacis is great opens at 4 pm or in the morning till 12 . Have a tour in piazza Navona but it's cafes are too much for tourists . Enjoy!
