Leaving the Villa Celinontana through its portal on the back, we found ourselves in front of an unexpected vision, but which we already knew: the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
It was open and we could not resist the desire to go in and visit it 'in the evening'.
The Basilica is located on the Caelian Hill and is dedicated to the two Roman officers John and Paul, victims of the persecution of the emperor Julian the Apostate.
It was built on pre-existing Roman houses that stood close to the Clivus Scauri, the ancient road that led to the top of the Caelian Hill.
Most of these were shops but also refined homes belonging to important families of the city.
And the basilica was founded on one of these houses, to be exact above the one in which John and Paul, Roman officers who converted to Christianity, were beheaded and buried in 362 AD.
It underwent the sacks of Alaric (410) and that of the Normans (1084) and was rebuilt: in the twelfth century the portico and the bell tower were added.
Modified in the 1700s, losing its paleochristian basilica layout, the paleochristian façade with the 3rd century marble columns was restored around 1950.
Noteworthy is the beautiful Cosmatesque portal and the medieval oratory with scenes of the Passion frescoed in the 9th century.
The Basilica is a spectacular church, imposing and suitable for the celebration of events and weddings.
It is also called The Church of the Chandeliers for the large number of chandeliers inside.
These were given as a gift in the 1950s by the titular cardinal Francis Joseph Spellman, who had been Archbishop of New York.
He brought them from the Grand Hotel Waldorf Astoria in New York, which was undergoing renovations and change of décor.
For this reason and for the spectacular light effects and spotlights that enhance the beauty of the coffered ceiling, the church in recent years has become one of the most popular locations for religious upscale weddings.

The church stands on the 'domus' of two officers of Constantine (John and Paul), martyred in 362, on which Roman senator Byzas and his son Pammachius built the church in 398.
The history of the church and of the two saints to whom it is dedicated goes back to the IVth century.
According to tradition John and Paul, two veterans, were put to death during the reign of Emperor Julian, because they refused to worship the pagan gods. However historians claim that the Emperor did not persecute the Christians in the western part of the Empire and that the devotion to John and Paul was based on accounts related to other martyrs.
In the Vth century a basilica was built on the site of their assumed martyrdom.
The church suffers from the Sack of Rome, it was plundered and pillaged by the Visigoths of King Alaric (410) and by the Normans (1084) and was rebuilt.
In the XII century the portico and the bell tower were added.
The original façade was crowned by a small loggia with five openings, the portico was added in ca. 1150 and in the following century a gallery was built upon it.
Modified in the 1700s, losing its setting as an early Christian basilica, the early Christian façade with IIIth century marble columns, it was restored around 1950.
Inside there are remarkable frescoes, such as "Christ The Redeemer in Glory" (1588) by painter Pomarancio, while at the main altar there are the relics of the two martyrs inside a ancient porphyry urn.
The bell tower (perhaps the finest Romanesque bell tower of Rome) is decorated with discs/crosses of porphyry and ceramic dishes.
Noteworthy is the beautiful cosmatesque portal and the medieval oratory with scenes of the passion frescoed in the 9th century.
St Paul of the Cross is buried here.
Nowadays it is the world headquarters for the Passionist order.
The impressive set od hanging chandeliers come from the Waldorf Astoria hotel in NYC.
American Cardinal Spellman of NY, titular of the church from 1947 to 1967, acquired them and donated them when the Waldorf was having a makeover.
The current aspect of the interior is partly due to later changes which include the chandeliers which make it resemble a ballroom.
The church, due to its current look, has become one of the most popular and prestigious wedding venues in historic center of Rome.
Although not much remains of the early Christian basilica, especially in its interior, the Basilica of Ss Giovanni e Paolo is very majestic.
To appreciate this aspect even more, you have to go there during weddings, especially on Saturdays, when the large chandeliers are turned on, otherwise it appears a bit dark.
Well worth a visit.

The basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo is a basilica located on the Celio hill in front of an entrance to Villa Celimontana. The basilica is considered minor, but the reason why it is worth visiting is the splendid chapel of San Paolo della Croce and some spectacular stained glass windows.
