We did a Vatican tour and it was a lovely experience. Nicolo is a talented guide, who's been working for 10 years and he's a true ROMAN guide. Thanks to his touch our visit was an amazing experience, he was able to bring to life the History of the Vatican and entertained us with anecdotes about the Popes.

We booked through Ciao Tours and one of the benefits was getting Private Travel Guides for some of the cities. In Rome we had Valentian Criverllari - PhD in Humanities, who had been doing tours for +25 years, With a private tour guide, you have time to enjoy the sites, get background information as well as ask questions. You are at your own pace and not a group.
Val with her Ipad & 3D software brought to life - Rome as it was. She would point her Ipad and the presentation would show what the site looked like 1900 years ago, She didn't read from a script but KNEW Rome. We had two days with her, one 4 hours tour was Old Roman, Panthenon etc and one 6 hour tour was the Vatican. I am a Catholic and never realized the symbolism of religious paintings and their colors. We have had private guides in 3 previous trips but Val was one of the best. She is on facebook.

Even though the tour starts quite early, this is an excellent way to see and learn about the main Vatican attractions (Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, the Vatican Museum) before the lines and crowds. Fabbi was the best tour guide, and her knowledge for the history and artwork came through in her tour. She was a wonderful guide and it was a wonderful trip! If you do the Roman Guide with the Vatican, ask if you can have Fabiola (Fabbi). She is a gem!

Eleonora hat uns Rom so nah gebracht, dass wir auch ohne, dass wir Geld in den Trevi-Brunnen geworfen haben wieder zurückkehren werden.

My husband & I feel privileged to have had Nic as our tour guide for the Ancient Rome Colosseum & Forum Tour last Saturday afternoon. Niccolo is so passionate about the history of his city & is thoroughly engaging. He has a unique way of bringing history to life so much so it gave me goosebumps imagining the activities in The Colosseum and The Forum. Niccolo has great attention to detail & points out so many intricate interesting facts that may be missed by others.
I love how he explained the cultural & politic landscape of the time which gives a rich historical context to the tour. Niccolo is so much more than a guide. He is a native Roman & historian. You can see he has so much knowledge & intelligence & the fact he grew up and lives in Rome adds an extra authenticity to his offerings.
We could have stayed taking to Niccolo for hours. He was eager to answer questions & what he doesn't know about Ancient Rome seriously isn't worth knowing!
We absolutely fell in love with Rome & will be back. We would thoroughly recommend Niccolo as a guide & will definitely request his services again upon our return. Thank you for a fascinating tour. It has really ignited our passion for the history of Rome & the experience is one we will never forget. It really was the highlight of our trip! We are very grateful for your time and your passion.

Niccolo showed us around the colloseum, palatine and forum. As a former professor of classical history he knows everything from the buildings, the way of life and politics. He a great storyteller too, I could see the palaces, temples and basilicas reerect before my eyes and was strolling around the greatest site in history for a few hours like a Roman, with a Roman guide.

My friends and I booked the Colosseum/Palatine Hill/Forum tour and had Ferdinando as our guide.
As we had never been to Rome, this was an excellent way to give us some background and provide context to these sites so we could appreciate what we were seeing. It was especially fun because Ferdinando had done some of his research related to the Colosseum and was able to share his own perspectives. It also seemed clear that he had the background to be able to discuss in more depth had any of us been more familiar with Roman history.
It was also a good way to help us power through our first day which we were feeling a bit jet lagged (and would recommend it for others for this reason, too).
Also, it was also very hot and Ferdinando was considerate of making sure we had opportunities to rest/listen in the shade along the way.

Is there a way to know if a local guide is really licensed?
And how do I know if he/she is a licensed local tour guide of Rome?
I mean, is there something like the UK Blue Badge for guides in Rome?

I've been working as a guide for 10 years and I can answer you as authorized tour guide of Rome.
I'm Niccolò Arcangeli, official tour guide licensed by the Provincia di Roma (it's very similar to the Blue Badge for guides in London).
In Italy guides are certified by different States. You can see the State on the badge they carry. So, to find a local and licensed guide to hire: ask the guide the State he/she was licensed by.

Ciao Beppe, la visita del Colosseo dura 3 ore ed include anche il Foro Romano e il Palatino. Il costo è la tariffa stabilita dalla Provincia di Roma: €130. Non sono inclusi i biglietti, ognuno costa €14 con prenotazione, per bambini sotto 18 è gratis (si pagano solo €2 di prenotazione).
