There’s not a lot left of this forum which was built mostly by the Emperor Domitian and completed by the Emperor Nerva in 97AD. Only a fairly small part of the Minerva Temple remains.
What you see here is a couple of fluted Corinthian columns, a small sculpture of the goddess, Minerva with helmet and shield and a section of frieze with detailed but eroded scenes.
Nevertheless it is worth a quick look mainly because it is very close to the Colosseum and it can be easily seen from the public footpath. If you are walking along the Via dei Fori Imperiali (the street of the Imperial Forums) towards the Colosseum, you’ll pass right by it on the left hand side of the road. Even with a close-up view, the details are still quite worn-down so it helps to know something about the temple beforehand.
Originally it would have stood on a tall podium, with 6 columns on the facade but the collapse of the Roman Empire and the common practice of stripping older sites for building material destroyed most of what was once here, leaving just these bare remains. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the frieze which shows repeated images of women spinning and weaving (Minerva was the goddess of crafts). Originally, it also told the story of Arachne & Minerva, although very little of this bit ids left. Arachne was a young woman who so proud of her weaving that she foolishly thought she could challenge Minerva to a contest. She shouldn’t have messed with the gods. Poor Arachne was never going to be a winner. Peeved, Minerva spitefully turned her into a spider, dooming her to spin webs in dark places forever and leaving us with the word ‘arachnid’ for spider.

The Forum of Nerva was built in the 1st century AD, it had the shape of a rectangular corridor that connected the Suburra (current Monti district) to the Roman Forum, and for this transit function, it was also called "Transitorium".
In this area the Temple of Minerva stood out, unfortunately only ruins have survived, since its materials were used for the construction of other monuments (in particular the Acqua Paola fountain on the Janiculum), as it was customary in the past centuries.
Among the few remaining ruins, the two splendid fluted columns called the "Colonnacce" stand out.
The columns are over 10 meters high and have Corinthian capitals on which rests a part of the attic in which the splendid bas-relief depicting the goddess Minerva stands out.
On the frieze are visible other depictions of female work activities.
The area was occupied mainly by commercial buildings and by the perimeters of the two gigantic apses on the southern side of the Forum of Augustus.
In its subsoil ran the Cloaca Maxima, a monumental sewer pipe that tradition traces back to the time of the kings of Rome, more exactly to the sixth century BC: it came from the Suburra, crossed the Roman Forum and the Velabrum and flowed into the Tiber, immediately after the 'Tiber Island'.
Emperor Domitian was the real founder of the Forum of Nerva.
On the basis of the data of recent excavations and the information provided by experts in archaeology, it is possible to establish that the transformation of this stretch of the Argiletum into a Forum took place by the emperor Domitian and that perhaps already in the years 85-86 the new complex must have assumed a very specific shape.
However Domitian was assassinated in 96 and thus he could not inaugurate his new Forum, which was instead done in 97 by his successor, namely Nerva (96-98 AD), from whose name the Forum takes its name and and it is known for.
A must see!

This is one of the better preserved parts of Ancient Rome. It is located across the street from the Roman Forum. It dates back to 97AD and included the Temple of Minerva and the Colonnacce. Today, the well preserved crescent shaped perimeter walls and several columns remain. Ongoing excavations continue to this day.
