Perhaps not everyone knows that in Rome there is a corner of Genoa.
The Roman district of Trastevere preserves in fact the memories of the Genoese nation in Rome in the beautiful architectural complex dedicated to St.John the Baptist, founded in 1482 by a Genoese nobleman and merchant Meliaduce Cicala to house his compatriots in need of assistance.
The church of S. John the Baptist of the Genoese, in Trastevere, is the seat of the Confraternity of the Genoese and Ligurians in Rome. The adjacent hospital, of which only the beautiful fifteenth-century cloister remains, was available to Genoese merchants and their families.
It is a magical and extraordinary place, an oasis of peace literally out of time, owned by the brotherhood of the same name.
The Confraternity of San Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi managed the hospital and church property for two centuries.
The aim and goal of the Confraternity was to support, help and cure the needy people of Genoese and Ligurian origin residing in Rome, but above all it preserved the Cloister of the Melangoli, attributed to Baccio Pontelli, the architect of the Sistine Chapel.
The arched portico and the architraved loggia have octagonal travertine pillars, typical of the architecture of the times of Pope Sixtus IV. The courtyard has been transformed into an orchard-garden with melangoli (bitter orange trees), lemon and mandarin trees, with myrtle fences, acanthus plants and climbing roses.
In the center of the garden there is a stone well from the end of the 15th century.
The church of San Giovanni dei Genovesi, located at the corner between via Anicia and via dei Genovesi, testifies to the presence of the large Genoese community in this area, which was steady over the centuries and which expressed itself in significant commercial activity especially when it was in full activity the nearby port of Ripa Grande on the Tiber.
In 1481 a wealthy Genoese merchant, Meliaduce Cicala, treasurer of the Apostolic Tax institution, after his death, destined his
money and some lands located in the Sabina region for the construction of a church and a hospital to house, shelter and cure the sick Genoese sailors.
Pope Sixtus IV (a Ligurian pope of the Della Rovere family) accepted the will of Cicala, and chose the place for the construction of the church and hospital in the Trastevere district.
A few years later, another Ligurian pope of the Cybo family, Innocent VIII, transformed the primitive hospice into the Hospital of S. Giovanni Battista dei Genovesi, a long and low two-storey building, and established that the rector of the church had to be elected among the Genoese priests.
Erected in 1481, the church was almost completely renovated in 1864.
The interior has a single nave with a barrel vault, an apse and three altars.
The chapel of St. Catherine Fieschi Adorno of Genoa opens off the bottom left hand corner of the church and is on the ground floor of the south-east wing of the cloister. It was decorated by Odoardo Vicinelli by 1740 and is a nice Baroque room. The altarpiece shows the saint's death.
There are some valuable ancient works of art: on the right altar, the late seventeenth-century altarpiece depicting St. George and the dragon by Filippo Zucchetti, 1696.
On the left altar, the altarpiece depicts the "Apparition of the Madonna of Savona", by Giovanni Odazzi.
On the main altar there is the altarpiece "Baptism of Christ", painted by the Flemish painter Nicolas Régnier before 1627.
Also worthy of attention are the precious Renaissance cupboard of the "Oli Santi" (Holy Oils) with the arms and initials od Meliaduce Cicala, a work of a Florentine workshop from the end of the 1400s, attributed to Mino da Fiesole and the monument to the founder of the the church, Meliaduce Cicala, attributed to the workshop of Andrea Bregno, 1481.
The ancient Oratory of the Confraternity is also present in the architectural complex, the original layout of which seems to date back to the end of the 16th century. Divided into two parts by a 17th-century frescoed arch, the space has a 17th-century coffered ceiling, adorned with coats of arms and minute drawings, with depictions of life stories of the Virgin along the walls, and of St. John the Baptist, behind the arch.
Walking through Trastevere, in the stretch of space that connects the churches of Santa Maria dell' Orto and that one of Santa Cecilia, you don't even notice this locely place if you don't pay attention. Only a small plaque in front of an ancient but inconspicuous door indicates the presence of the brotherhood with its beautiful cloister.
The cloister can be visited for 2 or 3 hours a day, in the afternoon.
But what is enchanting is the tranquility and timeless atmosphere of this place.
The church of the complex, also very elegant, has another entrance from the square.
It is very rarely open.
If you can, go and visit the complex, possibly with a guided tour: it is worth it.
