This is a small National Church located at Via delle Copelle just south of the main piazza. It has a history dating back around to at least 1195 but it seems many specifics have been long lost. The church is noted for having been given role in the 15th century as a hospice and place for those fallen ill during pilgrimage to Rome to seek care.
What you can see today seems to be from a church rebuild by Carlo De Dominicis around 1750. The exterior facade is subtle with embedded columns, empty pediment. It is nice and simple while the small interior is a bit more decorative with marble lined columns and walls. There is also an attractive screen in front of the main altar that is worth viewing for a few minutes. The ceiling fresco has an Eye of Providence shining rays of light. This is another point of interest within the church.

We wanted to see the church again, having found it open.
The church is located in Piazza delle Coppele and is perhaps the real attraction of this small square.
A legend tells that the church, dated around the 11th century, was built on the remains of the residence of St. Abbasia, an ancient Roman noblewoman.
The artistic and structural details of San Salvatore alle Coppelle reflect the long history that the church has gone through.
The styles tend to mix and overlap , revealing the past centuries.
The interesting and exciting testimony of the passing of time is also given by two tombstones placed on the side of the building: the first, dated 1750, served as a letterbox where hosts and hoteliers were required to file complaints of their guests' illness, in the fear that they were hiding some epidemic disease.
The second is a stone slab that reads as follows: "Chi (es) a del S.mo Salvatore della Pietra al (it) er delle cuppelle 1195". This is the first public inscription in Rome in the vernacular and dialectal language, where the transformation from Latin into Italian is clearly visible.
It is a Catholic church built in a beautiful Romanesque style and located a short distance from the Pantheon.
It is a building with certainly very ancient origins.
It stands out especially for the beautiful exposed brick bell tower. Inside, the architectural details and frescoes make it a small jewel that is absolutely worth a visit if it is open.

We have been passing by so many times.
It is a small, simple and unassuming church, very close to Via della Maddalena.
It was built in the 11th century on a pre-existing church dedicated to S. Maria della Pietà.
In 1196 Pope Celestine III restored it rededicating it with the name of San Salvatore alle Coppelle and having the bell tower built.
The first mention of this church dates back to some sources in 1195.
It is called 'alle coppelle (at the barrels) from the name of the wooden barrels to keep water (with a capacity of about 5 liters) made in this area until the sixteenth century.
The church underwent an extensive restoration in 1739 and at the same time the facade was rebuilt according to a project by Carlo De Dominicis.
The simple facade has a portal surmounted by a rectangular window. On the sides there are two portals surmounted by two framed roundels.
The interior with three naves has an iconastasis in the background decorated with the depiction of the "Last Supper".
It is almost always closed.
To visit it, you have to go on Sunday morning, between 10 and 11:30, when the church is open for the Sunday liturgy.
It is the church of the Romanian Community in Rome.
The Byzantine rite of mass is very suggestive.
Recommended.
