One of the biggest churches in the world even though a minor basilica. Impressive in imposing scale if not beauty and noticeably visible from distance The lower front elevation and doors are attractive but the unfinished brickwork to the upper external elevations mean it does not compare in beauty to San Marco in Venice, il Duomo in Florence, il Duomo in Milan. However, it also dominates the Piazza Maggiore the heart of Bologna.
Worth seeing the interior for the 22 chapels, especially the Bolognini Chapel of the Magi and Dante's depiction of Heaven and Hell with the figure of Lucifer;11111 the stained glass windows, and the Cassini Meridian Line on the floor of the left aisle.
free but for a €2 pass to take photos and to enter the Bolognini chapels (€5 seems a bit steep ).

Ein von außen aufgrund der unvollständigen Verkleidung etwas ungewöhnlich und im Innenbereich sehr groß. Interessante Glasfenster und Sonnenuhr/Meridian.

It may not be especially beautiful on the outside, but all the chapels within it make the entrance worthwhile. If you can only see one church in this city of many churches, this is the one.

La Basilica di San Petronio si lega inscindibilmente con bologna ed i suoi abitanti. Da segnalare la meridiana più
grande del mondo realizzata secoli fa dall'astronomo Cassini e la cappella dei magi, dove è possibile vedere una rappresentazione dell'inferno tra le più belle mai viste.

Right on Piazza Maggiore, a very impressive basilica. Ornately decorated on the inside. Loved seeing Foucault's pendulum.

Ovviamente il tour in quel di Bologna deve comprendere la basilica di San Petronio vera istituzione. Opera del tardo gotico senza eguali. La Cappella dei Magi cheti lascia senza parole. Senza dimenticare la meridiana e il pendolo di Focault.

Came here just as dusk was falling. The basilica is beautifully set in the heart of Piazza Maggiore- the main square in Bologna. Definitely worth a visit as it is the main attraction in town.

La più grande chiesa di Bologna affaccia su Piazza Maggiore. Ingresso controllato da militari. Oltre a i bellissimi affreschi e quadri, attira molta curiosità anche il meridiano e il pendolo.

Let me be more clear about the incident I wrote under “Lord of Discrimination”:
The old hag I mentioned was an old man (let me be clear again, elderly male worked there) came in around 2pm - 3pm on Dec 3. It is not an unfortunate incident as you implied, but a deliberate act of discrimination in the house of the Lord.
Shame on your denials.

Thank you for your interest in the Basilica di San Petronio. The only fee you have to pay inside the church is to enter the Bolognini Chapel (3 euros each, for groups 1 euro each), to visit the choir where is now exhibited a collection of ancient musical instruments (0,50 euro each) and to take pictures (2 euros each).
Opening hours 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Visits are not allowed during the celebration of the Holy Mass.
