Un gioiellino. Ottima acustica e poltrone molto comode.

I had very good tickets to Bologna Opera for May 2020, stalls, but, as you know, nothing came of it because of coronavirus.
I ventured then into Rai Opera & Ballet collection – great thanks to them, by the way, one only needs to register and then you can enjoy the whole collection free of charge, moreover, no time limit!
So I went there and found Verdi’s ‘Ernani’, and it turned out to be a truly outstanding production! Not only the voices were great, which is all the more remarkable, as the singers do not appear to be Internationally acclaimed, apart from Feruccio Furlanetto the names did not say much to me. The stage settings and costumes looked no less richly tailored than in the Metropolitan where I watched and heard the same opera just a week ago, if not more, it was very interesting to compare.
I genuinely enjoyed the performance, and now I am trying to figure out how I can visit the Opera theatre in Bologna off-line. Vivaticket, the company selling tickets to most events in the country, not only theatre, even football, had sent me a voucher valid 18 months. It looks like a long time, but in reality it isn’t.
To start with, the pandemic is not yet over, and God only knows when it will be. Then there is the Shengen visa, not such a headache as its UK counterpart, but still, a lot of paperwork required, and quite some money, too.
Last but not least, I initially planned a trip to Milan with a day outing to Bologna; how I am going to combine the two now I don’t have the slightest idea.
Well, looks like I’ll have to choose a title and fly to Bologna just for an opera overnight, as music connoisseurs do...
P.S. The images supplied are screenshots, I thought you may want to see how how it looked onstage. Again, after three months of online performance from the best concert houses of the world I was very, very impressed!

Vergognoso! Caso unico in Italia e pure foraggiati con soldi pubblici

Just completed ticket purchase procedure – quite a story, better to tell you now before I forget all those brain-twisters :)
I like doing everything in advance; the tickets are for May 2020, about half a year ahead. And you know what? Half of the house is sold out! I’ll tell you more: they already have 2020-2021 season schedule, and you can buy the tickets for December 2020! And even there the choice tends to be limited! Well, Italians surely love their opera…
Anyway, this is what I did:
First thing - to open Teatro Comunale di Bologna official site. It’s very simple, you have it here on TripAdvisor, in the upper right corner, together with the address, etc. Google or whatever searching system you have helps, too.
By the way, congratulations to the theatre on having a very stylish and user-friendly site! (No much English, but that’s OK :) They have all titles for the season on display, just scroll down the page, first opera, then orchestra music etc., then ballet. All ‘posters’ made in the same style, Picasso-like but less aggressive and depressive than the original :)
You arrive on the production page with all the outgoing data and cast, if it’s already known. The schedule is to the right, and, once you have chosen the date – note that matinees are cheaper, while night performances are night indeed, at 8 p.m., if not later! – you can go to the booking page by clicking ‘aquista’.
Then you are transferred to a different site, namely that of Vivaticket. This is, to the best of my understanding, an all-Italian aggregator, they sell tickets for all kind of events, maybe even sports, not sure, not my glass of Chianti :))
Once you are there, again you see the whole block, as many performances as there are. Again – click ‘aquista’ (buy), and arrive on the date you need.
Note: the site automatically goes Italian, but you can switch it into English in the upper left corner.
Supposing we are going to ‘Giselle’, a well-known ballet. The tickets are more expensive than for the opera, but not considerably – for example, the ‘platea’ (stalls) for my ‘Adriana Lecouvreur’ were at about 75 euro, here we have the same seats for 84 euro. Note that Vivaticket will take a commission of 3 euro for their services – well, OK, they function fairly well :)
Scroll down to see the map of the theatre house. On the one hand, if it’s an opera, the sound usually goes up. On the other hand, I was told by local travel gurus, that the boxes are not very comfortable, and it’s an opera in four acts!
Another surprise for me was that the difference between the stalls and the upper tiers was just about 30 euro, about 60 – 70%, that is. At home at the Bolshoi it’s often 10 times, official rates! Well, I though I’d crush my budget for the one-in-a-life experience and go for the stalls :) Note that the stalls have no numbers, only letters!
To choose the seats you need to go up and click ‘manually’ instead of ‘automated selection’ – I really hate any machine doing ‘automated selection’ for me! You click the seat you want… and here the trouble begins!
To buy anything from them you need to be registered, and registration takes time. Not much, about 5 minutes, just be prepared. They ask for your address and phone, e-mail and – note – your identity (passport or driving license).
Once you are registered and back to the site, you go along the same road to put the seat you want into your basket. After that everything goes smoothly, even if you book from another country, as I did. As far as I remember, you can pay with Visa / Mastercard and all sorts of fancy applications, your phone, etc.
The payment is processed very quickly, and you can print the ticket from their site, or from your e-mail. No idea if you can just come and show the QR code on your smartphone, I’d better not.

We booked on a Saturday morning tour.
There were only 6 of us in our group which was a good size.
Our guide was one of the costume makers for the Theatre which we found quite strange but we went with it. We don't know if she was ill or just nervous but she kept coughing and talking very quietly.
We then found out that a company had hired the theatre to do a team building day. This mean't everywhere we went there were groups of people doing some sort of "acting".
We went into the Auditorium and were told to get out as they were acting on the stage.
Seriously what was the point??? We came to see the whole theatre and we didn't even get any photo of the auditorium.
The lady who was taking our tour had no idea about the team building day so clearly no one at the theatre actually talk to each other.
It was a total waste of time and money.

This lovely opera house built by music supporters and not by the state is a must see in Bologna. The ceiling is magnificent. The view from the stage towards the boxes is also great.
Unfortunately the seats were renewed in a economical way, not in line with the old and gracious building. The knee room was also very small.
We watched a modern version of Verdi’s
La Traviata with English surtitles. It was a good production with quite good voices.
The house was full.

Hallo,
LG Rebecca
I will be in Bologna April 18-20. I love Opera and wish to see and hear at the Teatro Communale Di Bologna.
Why does this start so early, please? 18:00 hours or is this the opening time of the box office.
I would like to meet fellow opera lover over a wine in the bar?

Hello, may I ask what are the differences between the said "platea" and "palchi" for seats? Are all seats providing good view?
Are the rear seats (back seats) in the the upper lodges providing good view or you have to lean?
Thank you.

I intend to reserve tickets for Carmen (March 2016) using the online ticketing service on the Teatro Comunale website. Appraently the tickets will be on sale from 07/01/2016. Despite e-mailing the ticket office and the online ticket service, I'm still not sure what the procedure is for actually getting the tickets. The last e-mail I had seemed to suggest I pick the tickets up from the box office on the day of performance. Can anyone confirm this?

Dear Jack,
at this time is in progress the sale of subscriptions for the season 2016. From January 7, all unsold seats will be sold, as individual tickets, online and at the theater box office. You can collect a ticket purchased online directly at the theater box office on the day of the show (remember to bring with you your printed confirmation).

Buongiorno Alessandro.
No, a Bologna ci sono altri teatri dedicati alla prosa:
Teatro Duse
Arena del Sole
Teatro delle Celebrazioni
Dehon
Cordiali saluti
