In comparison with other ancient Roman theaters, I thought this semi-Circle was about 2/3 the diameter of, say, the one in Merida, Spain. This one was discovered around 1860 and the entire theater was enclosed by a rectangular wall. Only the wall behind the stage remains. There are about 5 different descriptions posted on the boards behind the remains and there’s a very good reconstructed image of the original. I suggest studying the model before checking out the remains. Walking down a plank going through the middle, the stage and left side of the seating area can be seen.

Per entrare si paga un biglietto (consiglio il cumulativo da 8€, così si visita anche altro in città).
La struttura della facciata è imponente (è quella che si vede spesso in Rocco Schiavone, per chi lo segue), anche l'emiciclo è ben conservato. Però c'è una gran parte che è chiusa (stanno facendo dei lavori, è evidente) e quindi non si può andare nei fornici ad esempio.

Spectacular. Believed to have been constructed in the time of Emperor Claudius and to have seated 3.000/4,000 people.

This large and very impressive area of Roman Theatre ruins is located very close to the Porta Praetoria. It is believed that the amphitheatre was built several centuries after Aosta was originally founded by the Romans in 25BC and probably in the time of Claudius.

We gained entry via the Valle D'Aosta Culture Pass that allows a single entry into five different sites, including this one, for the cost of EUR10 per person.

The largest structure visible is the 22 metre high section of the southern facade with its series of arches and windows. It is believed that this facade was originally over 60 metres long and that its short sides reached to a depth of 38 metres. It is estimated that the seating tiers of the amphitheatre could accommodate between 3,000 and 4,000 people and that the orchestra pit had a radius of 10 metres.

Unfortunately much of the rest of the theatre is just foundations as over the centuries the original function of the theatre was lost and other buildings were built on the site, using material from the theatre. Also the facade was used as a support structure for other buildings that were built butting up against it.

One of the quite amazing elements regarding the Theatre is the recovery, reconstruction and preservation work that has been undertaken over a long period of time since the first archaeological investigations began in 1838. There were some very good information boards (in Italian, French and English) and photos that detailed the extensive recovery process, much of which has been carried out since the late 1920's.

One of the Information Boards also has a 3D reconstruction image of what the theatre would have looked like in Roman times.

Highly recommended.

Vestigia Roma e imperdibili, con scavi archeologici ben in vista. Ottimo servizio di accoglienza e guida, luogo tenuto benissimo. Un parco archeologico molto grande, lontano dall’Urbe ma meritevole di visita se si ama l’impero romano.

Un lieu à ne pas manquer si vous êtes à Aoste!

Le théâtre romain d'Aoste est un théâtre antique. Il s'agit du plus célèbre des monuments d'époque romaine présents en Vallée d'Aoste.
La visite du site est sympathique et se fait rapidement (15-20 minutes). A noter que l’accès est gratuit pendant les journées européennes du patrimoine.
Un lieu à ne pas manquer si vous êtes à Aoste!

Nel piccolo centro storico della deliziosa Aosta sorge l'antico teatro Romano di cui è rimasta in piedi parte della facciata alta circa 20 metri.
Abbiamo usufruito di una promozione Natalizia per il biglietto di ingresso che con 5 euro a persona (bambini gratis) consente la visita di più siti fra cui la chiesa paleocristiana e il criptoportico forense.
