This town is a must see, especially for people interested in ancient Roman times. It has intact structures, to include: theater, forum, walls, towers, etc. I just discovered, while researching the towers, the town probably has a relationship with another French town, Chambery. They both belonged to County Savoy around 1100 AD. It was around this time of 1100 AD that the wall towers were built (from the internet).

I got a good photo of the wall tower, Fromage, near the theater. It seems to still be solid and thick, not knowing whether or not this one was ever attacked by a siege catapult. A possible defense could have been to use flaming arrows from the tower slits/window openings and hopefully catch the attacking wooden catapult on fire.

I ran out of time, but it might be a worthwhile endeavor to figure out the outline of the forum. One end was about the same as the entrance to the crypto portico site. After walking around a restaurant on ground level, there were columns and an empty space. However, This end didn’t seem to make a straight line with the crypto portico end?

There’s some ongoing rejuvenation in the town and I only see this town becoming more and more of a great tourist attraction. I highly recommend this place

Il centro storico di Aosta corrisponde con quella che era la città latina, il vecchio "accampamento" romano con il cardo e il decumano massimo. La struttura romana è ancora oggi ben visibile in molte parti della città, che merita di essere visitata.

Stadsbezoek met intieme centrale winkelstraat, tussendoor zicht op de imposante alpentoppen door de zijstraten. De oude kerk, naastgelegen klooster-galerij , en de resten van muur van de oude Romeinse vesting zijn indrukwekkende entourage. De modernere geschiedenis pa op het grote centrale plein, stadhuis samen met de omliggende winkelstraten met restaurants en specialiteitenwinkels maakt het bezoek compleet.

Absolutely beautiful. Surrounded by the Alps, Roman ruins around every corner and largely pedestrian only streets.

The old town of Aosta is largely contained within a rectangular precinct that is surrounded by three kilometres of Roman walls, the exception being the pedestrian only street that leads from the Arco Onorario d"Augusto to the Porta Praetoria.

The paved streets are mainly pedestrian only. There are a number of lovely piazzas, magnificent churches, stately buildings and Roman ruins just about around every corner.

Then there are the wonderful cafes, bars and restaurants. Then when you look up above the buildings you have the magnificent Alps.

We stayed for a week and we wished it could have been much longer.

We will absolutely return.

Beautiful small city with wonderful roman ruins

Beautiful small town with stunning Roman ruins and a beautiful mountain setting. Aosta has an elegant central square and nice streets with shops (chothes and local food specialties) - in several parts of the town you notice beautiful roman ruins, perfectly integrated with newer architecture. Lovely place for a night or as a base to try the slopes in nearby Pila

Så var jeg igen på familiebesøg i Aosta efter en pause på næsten 4år. Det er en skøn by med masser af old gamle romerbygninger og stemningen er derefter. Da jeg kom d.4/1-23 var der hele ugen stadig julemarked flere steder i byen og så var der også heksemarked, da det var heksens dag i weekend efter jeg var landet der. Så kan varmt anbefale byen og bestemt også området. Der er jo vildt smukt der. Det er jo en dal med bjerge hele vejen rundt om. Fra min families hus kan vi se Mont Blanc og der er jo ikke langt til de franske og sweiziske grænser. Elsker at kigge ind på de små lokale cafeer til enten kaffe eller et glas vin måske et glas mousserende vin fra lokale vinprodukter. Har selv slæbt en Cava Mont Blanc med hjem :)

Una bellissima città

Siamo stati ad Aosta in occasione dei mercatini di Natale. Abbiamo trovato la città deliziosa. Gradevolissimo passeggiare per vicoli, piazzette, vie ricche di negozi con prodotti tipici. Da vedere i resti romani davvero molto interessanti e le molte chiese tra cui la cattedrale e la collegiata di Sant' Orso. Grande la piazza principale su cui affaccia il municipio e che in occasione del Natale ospitava una pista di pattinaggio ed un albero. Molto belle le luminarie. Suggestiva anche la presenza della neve

Una chicca tra le Alpi

Passeggiando nel centro storico e perdersi tra i vicoletti di Aosta ne vale davvero la pena : si scoprono resti dei passaggi romani qua e la per poi ripercorrere la città tra un negozietto e l'altro. E che meraviglia quei formaggiai che vendono le tipicità della zona in primis fontina dop e mocetta oltre al lardo di arnad e i dolcetti chiamati tegole. Andateci anche solo una volta per assaporare il profumo di una delizia alla porta delle Alpi.

Centro storico raccolto ma molto carino in cui le strutture di epoca Romana risultano perfettamente integrate con le costruzioni di epoca moderna.
Ci sono vari parcheggi a pagamento anche se in alcuni orari potrebbero essere molto affollati.
Abbiamo fatto piacevolissime passeggiate sfruttando anche il clima clemente di questo fine anno

Questa piccola cittadina al centro della Valle d'Aosta è la meta perfetta per una gita in giornata.
Una città dove potrete passeggiare nel centro storico, scoprendo il suo passato millenario e quello che rimane del suo splendore al tempo dei romani.
Consiglio di acquistare il biglietto cumulativo Aosta archeologica al costo di €5 che permette l'ingresso al Museo Archeologico, al Teatro Romano, al Criptoportico e alla Basilica Paleocristiana di San Lorenzo.
Nel centro spicca la piazza Chanoux sede del municipio e cuore pulsante della città dove fermarsi per gustare qualche prelibatezza locale. Da lì si può passeggiare fino all'arco di Augusto passando attraverso la maestosa Porta Pretoria che un tempo consentiva l'ingresso alla città romana.
Da non perdere anche una visita alla Cattedrale e alla Collegiata di Sant'Orso.
