The church overlooks the eastern side of the square of the same name which is located just outside the historic center, just north of Porta Carini. Built during the 16th century, it was initially laid out in a late Gothic-Catalan style, but over the years, following the change that was taking place in architectural taste, the church, when it was completed in 1594, had taken on a mannerist appearance and the memory of the first period remains only in the ribbed vaults of the nave or in the interior of the small dome of the second chapel on the right. From the outside, the façade certainly cannot be defined as monumental or in any case showy (mostly in the square, the large magnolioid ficus trees in the central garden capture the attention): the only element of some interest may perhaps be the portal with the broken tympanum, for the presence of the three statues of Giacomo Gagini (son of the better known Antonello).
Once you have crossed the entrance, however, you are greeted by a very sumptuous interior (single nave with 5 deep interconnecting chapels on each side, plus transept and presbytery flanked by two other chapels), where among the many paintings, statues and funerary monuments scattered among the chapels, the many stuccoes, frescoes and mixed and polychrome marbles of the baroque decoration carried out between the 17th and 18th centuries emerge forcefully. I have not detected individual masterpieces, just as some chapels are more eye-catching than others, but what is striking is, as mentioned. it is the entire decorative apparatus as a whole, which makes the interior spectacular. Although it is certainly not among the usual tourist itineraries, it is a church that I recommend visiting because, among the free ones, it is certainly among the most beautiful.

It is a 16th century Catholic church and monastery, in Catalan Gothic style. Built between the years 1518 to 1594. A marble portal stands out on the façade. Its interior is very beautiful, with frescoes to admire. It was the first temple we entered when we arrived in the city.

La chiesa è veramente bella, come gran parte delle chiese di Palermo sono dei veri e propri gioielli d'arte.

Facciata con due alte paraste in bugnato, divisa in tre ordini da cornicioni, il portale costituito da lesene, sul lato destro il campanile. Interno a navata unica con profonde cappelle laterali, architettura tardo gotica caratterizzata da interventi manieristici e addobbi barocchi con ricchi affreschi, stucchi, decorazioni in marmi policromi. Soffitto con volte a crociera, vele con affreschi e costolature ornate, finestre laterali.

Questa chiesa, sede d'incontro di molti fedeli devoti a San Francesco di Paola, cui è dedicata, sorge nel luogo in cui la tradizione vuole che fosse stata sepolta Santa Oliva, una delle quattro patrone di Palermo, prima che Santa Rosalia ne prendesse il posto. Là dove sorgeva una chiesetta in onore di S. Oliva, cominciarono i lavori di costruzione dell'attuale chiesa dei Frati Minimi di San Francesco di Paola, con annesso convento, attualmente sede di una caserma. I lavori terminarono nel 1594. L'interno della chiesa presenta una sola navata con cappelle a destra e a sinistra, di differenti profondità. Nella seconda cappella a destra si conserva il "pozzo di Sant'Oliva", tradizionalmente luogo di sepoltura della Santa, che però non ho potuto ammirare perchè vi era ancora allestito il Presepe che lo nascondeva. Degno di nota, nell'ultima cappella a destra prima dell'altare maggiore, il sarcofago di Stefania Branciforti, principessa di Trabia, Scordia e Butera, opera di Valerio Villareale. Il fulcro della chiesa, a mio parere, è la cappella con la statua argentea di San Francesco di Paola che conserva le sue reliquie: un frammento di costola, un lembo del suo saio e il bastone che, secondo la tradizione, gli avrebbe permesso di attraversare lo stretto di Messina, con il mantello steso sull'acqua come un'imbarcazione. Davanti a questa cappella rimane accesa una lampada, giorno e notte, per ricordare il miracolo della lampada ad olio di San Francesco di Paola, avvenuto nel 1568: in tempi di grande carestia d'olio, i frati avevavo spento più volte tutte le lampade in chiesa, tranne quella del Santissimo Sacramento, eppure quella del Santo continuava miracolosamente ad ardere. La chiesa è stata recentemente restaurata, dal 2013 al 2014. Consigliata la visita; l'ingresso è gratuito.

Chiesa spettacolare, colpo d’occhio fantastico; abbiamo voluto rivivere le emozioni vissute venticinque anni prima nel giorno del nostro matrimonio. Grazie anche alla simpatia di padre Giorgio è stato un giorno indimenticabile.

Bellissima ed antica Chiesa,La struttura tardo rinascimentale è caratterizzata da addobbi barocchi ricchissimi di affreschi, stucchi, decorazioni in marmi mischi e policromi. L'interno d'impianto a croce latina mostra un'unica navata fiancheggiata da profonde cappelle intercomunicanti.
Francesco da Paola è stato un religioso italiano, proclamato santo da papa Leone X il 1º maggio 1519. Eremita, ha fondato l'Ordine dei Minimi.
