The train ride offers fantastic views of Etna and the surrounding areas. It is better to purchase the ticket ahead of time, especially if taking the early train! Departure is from the Borgo Train Station at 8:05am or 12:20. Two hours later one arrives in Randazzo (stopover approx. 2 hours and change of trains) and has time to walk around town before departing for the further journey to Giarre-Riposto (included in the ticket). Train from there back to Catania Central (buy a ticket from the ticket machines) takes about 30 minutes.
This ride is not only for nostalgic train lovers, but also for those that enjoy a multitude of sceneries.

We chose to stay in Bronte, midway on the Circumetna railway so that we could travel up and down the line over several days. We were not disappointed! Every aspect of the railway is wonderful. The little diesel railcars date from the 1950s and 60s and are still going strong. The stations are classic rural line buildings and the line snakes up the mountain through tunnels and high bridges. It is well used by local people including serving as the school bus. The trains ran on time and the staff were friendly. If you like old railways you will love the Circumetna, don't miss it, it is an unbelievable survivor, long may it last!

This is a very old rickety private railway used by the locals of Catania as they go about their business. It just happens to travel through the lowlands and villages around Mt. Etna with its solidified lava flows, almond and lemon orchards, vineyards and prickly pear bushes. As it climbs up to Randazzo, you will feel you that you know much more about life in Sicily with farmland on one-side and deep inland valleys on the other but with Mt. Etna ALWAYS ON THE RIGHT -HAND SIDE. Many photo opportunities in between the prickly pears!!! At Randazzo, top of the climb, there is a change of trains to take you for the downhill run into Giarre / Riposto on the coast which links up with the Trenitalia main line station to all points north and south. Take a packed lunch and drinks with you or eat at the station cafe. Cost is 7.80euros, takes about 3 /4 hours, and, on the day we travelled there was only two services (trains at 8.10am and 12.20pm) so pre-book. The Catania Metro station BORGO IS RIGHT NEXT TO THIS RAILWAY and Villa Bellini and its gardens just down the road. For rail enthusiasts (Michael Portillo for one) it is a must and for those who want to see the real Sicily IT IS ALSO A MUST. Enjoy.

Wir haben morgens um 8:05 den ersten Zug nach Randazzo genommen. Und von dort aus nach einer zwei stündigen Pause weiter nach Giarre-Riposto.
Der Zugfahrt war sehr beeindruckend. Man kann während der Fahrt die Fenster öffnen und am offenen Fenster stehen. Es war ausreichend Platz im Zug.
Man kann den Ätna während der Fahrt gut sehen, aber auch andere tolle Landschaften. Wenn man in Fahrtrichtung Rechts sitzt, kann man bessere Fotos vom Ätna machen.
Man sollte sich vor Fahrtantritt gut über die Zugzeiten informieren, da es nur 2 Züge am Tag gibt.
Eine direkte Umrundung gibt es leider nicht. Aber Randazzo ist einen kurzen Aufenthalt wert.
Mit 6,80 pro Person, ein wirklich günstiges Vergnügen. Für alle Zugfans ein Muss!

A rattly old train. Mt Etna and old lava fields on one side and some deep valleys on the other. Can hang your head out the window.
The first train stopped at Randazzo. We wondered what we were going to do there for an hour. After two, we were disappointed that we had to leave to get the train to Giarre.
The train does not go all the way around in one trip. There are some legs that may need to be covered by bus, but we did the entire loop by train.

Hola!! Quiero ir este verano de vacaciones a Sicilia, y estaba mirando de cojer la ruta con el ferrocaril de Circumetnea, pero necesitaria saber cómo comprar el billete de ir desde Catania a Riposto, si alguien me podría ayudar sería de gran agardecer, ya que llevo un rato investigando y no hay manera jajja... Muchas gracias !!

Purtroppo nel periodo in cui abbiamo preso noi la Cirumetnea il giro era limitato a Randazzo e non siamo riusciti a vedere forse la parte più interessante dal punto di vista paesaggistico. Molto gentili alla biglietteria. Pecca dei pochi orari e collegamenti (per non stare fino a tardi abbiamo poi preso un pullman al ritorno.

Für 7 Euro pp supergut. Dauer ca 3 h. Fahrt bis Randazzo, dann Umstieg (hier auf Wartezeiten achten). Für uns bester Teil war ab Randazzo bis giarre: Orangen - und Mandelbäume, Etna, Wein, Bergdörfer.
Von Catania an die ersten 45 Minuten einige Tunnel. Achtung-Ende in Borgo! Ca 35 min zu Fuß von Catania Hauptbahnhof entfernt.
Perfekte Aktivität für schlechteres Wetter.
Züge sind recht klein bzw. eng und ohne Klimaanlage. Fenster kann geöffnet werden. Keine Toilette im Zug.

Percorsa a Giugno 2021, dopo una lunga chiusura dovuta al lockdown.
Il personale della stazione è molto cordiale, nella stazione di partenza (Catania Borgo) ci sono state fornite indicazioni e consigli in biglietteria, mentre in quella di Randazzo ci è stata fornita persino una mappa del paese.
Attualmente il treno si ferma a Randazzo, per chi vuole arrivare a Giarre ci sono pullman sostitutivi.
Per tornare indietro consiglio la ferrovia moderna Giarre/Riposto - Catania

If you like to go with an old Fiat train, experience the most romantic and seductive way to see flora and fauna and are able to put your own itinerary together, this is the best way for you to experience the Etna.
To make the full round, you need to put your own together (this is not Disney World) but it's worth every minute.

Hallo, kann mir jemand sagen, ob die Circumetnea momentan fährt? Aus der Homepage geht das nicht klar hervor. Einen aktuellen Fahrplan kann ich auch nicht finden.

Buongiorno Rod B, mi sei stato suggerito da trip advisor per informazioni riguardanti la circumetnea. Il sito è sempre in aggiornamento, praticamente inutile, e l'unica informazione che ho ottenuto, è stata quella di sapere che la domenica non funziona. Volevo chiederti se hai a disposizione orari e tratte, attendibili però su novembre. Dovrei recarmi a Paternò da Catania, e rimanerci tutto il giorno. Usiamo solo mezzi pubblici. Mi puoi aiutare? Buona domenica da Erice(Trapani). Davide

Merci pour ce commentaire qui m'a donné envie de faire le tour de l'Etna avec ce petit train. J'ai deux questions:
1- Faut-il acheter les billets à l'avance ?
2- Y a t-il un moyen de laisser des bagages (Valises cabines) à Randazzo le temps de visiter et reprendre le train d'après.

We would like to take the Circumetnea train for part of the way from Bronte to Giarre. We will be staying in Taormina. How should we travel to a starting point (either one) and how should we travel back? Is there a train from Taormina to wither one or both that we could take or is a taxi the only timely way to do this? I look forward to your suggestions. Thank-you.

The timetable is on line or you can get a copy at the tourist information centre Catania. There is a metro station next to Catania centrale that connects to the Circumetnea.

It was warm in Catania in December -- 65-70F. The Mediterranean sun kept things warm(ish) even with the cooler winds blowing from the sea. I needed a windbreaker in the mornings and evenings. When you get closer to Mt Etna it gets chilly, meaning a good sweatshirt or light down jacket should keep you comfortable. Have fun!
