Tentiamo la fortuna il 1 novembre: in albergo ci hanno detto che sono aperti i festivi. Si tratta di due tombe etrusche i cui contenuti sono stati portati al MAEC di Cortona. Gli scavi hanno portato alla luce anche un"altare" probabilmente utilizzato per cerimonie religiose davanti alla tomba 1.

È fuori dalla città. Eravamo stati qui anni fa ma era un parco archeologico non visitabile se non previo appuntamento. Ora ci sono degli orari di visita (informarsi bene al museo archeologico) e l'entrata è gratuita. Il percorso ai due tumuli porta al magnifico altare del primo e alla camera sepolcrale del secondo con la scritta etrusca. Imperdibile.

In località il Sodo, appena dopo Camucia in direzione Castiglion Fiorentino, sorgono i due imponenti tumuli, qui detti "Meloni" I e II del Sodo.

This review is for the Parco Archeologico that is near the roundabout as you first enter the Cortona / Camucia area from the north on SR71. I think there are several reviews here that are misplaced - probably describing the restaurant at Il Melone Hotel.
Anyways, my wife and I walked there from the Villa we rented in Sodo and could not find the entrance. There are several signs that point to entrances that are not open. We were finally told that you have to go all the way around the west side to gain entrance but we gave up not wanting to walk another kilometer or so to be potentially disappointed again. We did drive there later and it is a tortuous route to get there. The entire park looks completely overgrown, but several buildings look new. Of course you have to pay to get in, no problem there, but at least keep the place looking presentable. Decided it was getting late, did not look like anyone was there, so it was not worth attempting to go in.
Unfortunately, a reflectively accurate assessment of Italy as a whole. The are antiquities all over this great country, I am sure they cannot all be preserved and made presentable for public viewing and learning. But if you are going to preserve and show them then put some decent signage up and keep the place looking presentable. Is it that hard to do?

Ho visitato questi scavi che non sono molto fruibili e che nascondono nel parcheggio a sinistra dell'ingresso una voragine vicino ad un tombino che ha messo in grave pericolo la nostra incolumità. Il comune dovrebbe provvedere a segnalare e transennare il fosso del parcheggio.

So che questa tomba è meravigliosa perchè me ne hanno parlato, purtroppo non ho potuto visitarla in quanto era tutto chiuso a grande distanza da una rete metallica e non c'era nessun guardiano per poter effettuare una visita. Mi è stato detto da una signora che abita accanto che purtroppo il sito è aperto solo d'estate. Inoltre ho girato parecchio per trovarlo perchè le indicazioni non erano chiare e ho dovuto chiedere informazioni a diverse persone.

Siamo stati a visitare il sito dei Meloni del Sodo e, una volta di più, si mischiano meraviglia e amarezza per come viene gestito il nostro patrimonio culturale. La visita (gratuita) vale veramente la pena: la tomba del Sodo I è chiusa ma la struttura è visibile e custodisce ancora un'iscrizione originale, mentre quelle del II sono accompagnate da una piattaforma votiva che rappresenta un unicum imperdibile! Il sito è aperto fino alle 13:30 (un po' difficile da trovare, primo appunto negativo) e vi troverete una gentilissima signora che sfida i 35 °C della campagna toscana per illustrarvi con passione e competenza la storia del posto. Lo stato di conservazione è decente, ma fa veramente male vedere le tombe puntellate con tubi innocenti ormai arruginiti (secondo punto negativo) e non è chiaro il futuro del sito, anche se sembra che l'attuale amministrazione comunale se ne occuperà efficacemente. Però... perchè in Italia tutto deve essere lasciato all'iniziativa e alla buona volontà del singolo? Perchè una tale meraviglia non è stata finora valorizzata come merita? Mah....

Una tomba unica! Credetemi! E' assolutamente da visitare! L'unico problema è che essendo "a conduzione pubblica", gli orari sono un po' problematici, ma per il resto è un tumulo stupendo!

Die Meloni Di Cortona sind zwei sehr eindrucksvolle etruskische Hügelgräber. Sie wurden 1909 und 1927 entdeckt. Melone 2 hat einen Durchmesser von 70 Metern. Beachten Sie auch den großen Stufen-Altar mit schönen Gravuren von Kampfszenen zwischen Menschen und mythischen Wesen.
Leider ist die Ausgrabungsstelle häufig geschlossen. Man muss Glück haben, um die Gräber besichtigen zu können.

Our guide and driver, Stafania Meloni, was an expert guide as well as a great source of information about Italian history and culture. The 4 of use hired her for a day to take us to three wineries in Tuscany: near Montalcino, Cortona, and Montepulciano. We tasted 5-6 wines at each. The first winery was a well-known winery near Montalcino. The tasting was very professional and included some of their best wines. The second was a medium-sized winery with a very good selection of wines. The representative of the winery gave only a general overview of each wine. Stefania stepped in and filled out the information. The third winery near Montepulciano was a small operation, yet very good wines. Here Stefania actually did most of the presentation of the wines - which were excellent.
We spent a good deal of time in the car with Stefania as we traveled from place to place. In some ways this part was as enjoyable as the wine tasting. Stefania provided extensive background information about the region, some of the hill towns, and Italian history. We had many question about Italian history and culture, especially the importance of family and food. Her answers were very descriptive and detailed - what an added bonus to this tour.
In retrospect all four of us felt this wine tour was a great highlight to our two weeks in Italy. We would highly recommend it. Stefania is also part of a cooking school that looked very interesting - did not have any time available however.
The cost for our guide, Stefania, was 200 euro. There were charges at each winery which varied depending on food and whether or not you purchased the wine.
