Beautiful place, surrounded by buildings with typical local architecture and with a beautiful cathedral, great for a relaxing walk. In December, they hold the Christmas fair (Märchenwald), with several tents selling typical Christmas food and products, especially those of the region.

We walked though this square a few times and each time was different. There were tourists (of course) but also school kids in lines, high schoolers kicking a ball around, people sitting at cafes, people carrying their shopping .... a living square.

I always make it clear that it is a European square, that is, pure cement. An urban space in front of the cathedral that is bounded by the surrounding houses and serves as a meeting point. It was my turn to tour it semi-empty and warm, but it usually houses markets and activities. One of the postcards in Basel.

Magnificent Munster! The top sightseeing spot. Great panoramic views over the Basel. I suggest to take a small boat from Munster to cross the Rhine. Kunst museum is a few steps away.

Auf diesem Platz gibts vieles zu sehen und man kann in jede Himmelsrichtung um die Geschichte Basels hautnah mitzubekommen. Mein Tipp: Hinter der Kirche gibts ne grandiosen Ausblick auf den Rhein.

The Münsterplatz is a very great square in front of the Cathedral and on the same elevation as this church.
Being a student Town the square is very lively but at the same time still quiet.
There are a few terraces but what is most impressive is the small wood on tha ground.
Really lovely setting in the heart of the town and a baken of rest the midst the busy city.

We had heard the two Christmas Markets in Basal were fantastic, I expected them to be really large like Zurich or Nuremberg but they were both quite small. It didn't mean they weren't wonderful they just didn't have that wow factor like larger Christmas Markets. The Munsterplatz market is adjacent to the Basal Munster(which is beautiful). It sits along the river and has spectacular views. The market had plenty of amazing food to choose from and lots of stalls with items to buy. We loved it at night when the stars were all lit up and the large Christmas tree was beautiful at dusk next to the Munster. It did get very crowded at night and on the weekend so go early.

A rather ordinary square. With the exception of the cathedral, there are no impressive buildings on the sides. In winter, here is one of Basel's main Christmas markets. Also here is the Museum of Cultures.

In front of the cathedral was a fabulous Christmas market. With the river and the cathedral in the background, this was a happening place.
