The river flows from west to east into Bern. Forming the famous U-shaped form around the city. Great experience to walk over some of the bridges.

While walking through Bern, you are never too far from the river. And the river looks magnificent from each viewing point. We saw it from high grounds when it looks far enough and up close from the bear pit where we were able to put our feet into the river and enjoy the coldness and calm. This is how rivers should be in between the cities.

Виды просто потрясающие! Особенно в солнечную погоду. Я шла по берегу от медвежьей ямы, но не поднималась по верхнему мосту, о чем немного жалею - наверное, впечатлений было бы еще больше.

The other reviews here are so true -- super experience. A couple things to add -- if you go to the main "campground" (it's not really an overnight campground-- more like a giant park right on the river, with a huge swimming pool, there are lockable lockers and changing areas, and also (importantly!!) free inflatable plastic safety floatation device, with a cord, you can just borrow and return -- that you can attach around you, or just carry with you. No need to buy anything like that, or to be afraid of the river if you are a little nervous -- quite a few people use them. They are yellow and hanging just after you enter the park. Just use, and then return when you leave. Yes, you should definitely be a decent swimmer, but it wasn't fearful and people of all age are doing this. Exiting the river is not as hard as I though it might be. There are lots of signs on where to exit, and easy to swim over on the side of the river to an exit 'channel' -- quite easy to get out via that way. I'm really glad I did this with my adult kids.

We love to swim in natural waters, but this was an unexpected treat! We saw tons of people just floating down the Aare from oir train and just had to try.
After some research (always required before these types of swims) we went to Campground Eichholz, which is perfect! The "beach" area is free, just a walk down and back up from the 9 tram or 29 bus. There's a good restaurant there too, and restrooms. You walk upstream as far as you want anf just float back down to your spot. You can also go farther, BUT there is a hazard before you get to Old Town Bern, so you must get out at the Marzili swimming pool area. We didn't do that, just walking up and floating down multiple times was great, perhaps our favorite day in Switzerland. We bought a tube at Aldi's up the street and did it again the next day, this time with our 12 year old and her grandpa. Great fun! Be safe!

We followed the footpath on the right side of the river (opposite the Tier Park) up to a large grassy area with a restaurant/bathroom/possible camping area. Ideal place to launch
If you travel up to Thun, you’ll need to bus/train and bring a boat/tube to head back into Bern.
It’s about a 45 minute (or more) float in some pretty refreshing water (cold).
