I've never experienced classism in the 15 years I had been visiting Switzerland until I visited this museum. I was told by the female receptionist that my accent was too thick for her to understand, as she only understood 'a real English accent' (assuming she meant Oxford English), after I complimented the residence. She then turned to my parents as if I wasn't there and only addressed them. I was taken back by this comment and my parents too who didn't know what to say. It unfortunately ruined our experience and we wanted to leave immediately. Sad to see classism infect such a beautiful home. We don't run museums like this in the real world.

My uncle studied opera in Germany after WW2 and performed songs from Wagner's Die Walkure and other operas, so I really wanted to visit the museum and learn more about Wagner's life and work. The museum is well maintained and the piano, furniture, sheet music, photos, and other exhibits are in great condition. The museum is small but the number and types of exhibits like the cast of his right hand and death mask are impressive. It is clear from several photos and inscriptions that Richard Wagner treasured his son Siegfried and hoped that he would preserve his works for the world.

We enjoyed walking along Lake Luzern to get to the museum, and had a nice visit. The museum was quiet, and we were able to enjoy reading all of the information and really take our time.
There was lots of interesting information about Wagner's life, including photos and original manuscripts.

First: Take a tram or a taxi. If you take a tram, you've still got a bit of a hike to get to the house. My parents took a taxi, which is your best bet if walking is a problem. The house is just two floors, spatially not that big, but there is a lot of information presented, so you will be on your feet.
I made the mistake of looking at my map and thinking it looked like a direct shot from the Bahnhof, and not "that far." It wasn't, and it was. I was sweating buckets and cursing Wagner by the time I re-connected with my parents.
I studied Wagner when I was in conservatory. (Like the books I read at the time, this museum skips the unsavory aspects of his person.) His talent and output must have had something extraordinarily charismatic and compelling about them. For just one thing, he had three children out of wedlock with the daughter of his good friend, Franz Liszt, Cosima. Cosima was married to Wagner's music director, and he stayed on even though he knew about the whole situation. And Liszt and Wagner remained friends. :head shake: But they skip over the anti-semitism.
The lower floor is laid out nicely and simply, with display cases, and a hint of domesticity with the furniture placement. There are chairs, the childrens' bedroom, Wagner's piano and desk. On display are several manuscripts, scores, and letters, and some articles of clothing. The views out the back certainly explain Wagner's choice of this house for a residence.
Only skirted upon is Wagner's Svengali-like relationship with Prince Ludwig. Millions of the insane monarch's marks flowed into Wagner's pockets, paying for his indulgences and his projects and productions.
The upper floor, when we were there, was devoted to Seigfried (the son) and some of the heirs, and to Wagner's signature accomplishment and legacy of Bayreuth, a theater still devoted to his works alone. (This summer, with temperatures around 100º F, it must be really fun to see a four hour opera with no A/C...)
The grounds and gardens are worth a walk-around and the views of the Lake are spectacular.
There is a little coffee/snack shop in front where you can have a little nosh before hoofing it back to the tram stop.

Quite a small museum aimed for a music scholar. Some interesting personal items of Wagner but I would like to have seen more information about the composer, his personality, views etc. The exhibition on the upper floor was about his son Siegfried Wagner was more informative than the permanent part on the ground floor. Lots of German explanations, but not a lot in English or French. Plenty of parking nearby if you're going by car.
I’m sorry to say but the woman managing the tickets was selective with her manners. She wasn’t polite when I was purchasing tickets; quite irritable actually with a few people who were in the museum at the same time with us.

Took the beautiful walk to Richard Wagner Museum on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Worth the trip. Beautiful grounds surrounding the house. Excellent story boards and artifacts inside the house to help you better understand and appreciate Wagner. Thoroughly enjoyed the walk through the house. Also some amazing views of the lake from the house.

We very much enjoyed the Wagner Museum, which is a quiet museum located a short bus ride away from the City Center. The museum is in an old house that Wagner once rented for six years. It has lots of Wagner memorabilia, but does not gloss over what a ridiculously bad excuse for a human being Richard Wagner was. And the supplemental exhibit on the 2nd floor was quite frank about the challenges experienced by Siegfried Wagner, who was gay in an era when that wasn’t acceptable (he as a result married and had four children in order to maintain cover). He was also an early Nazi sycophant as a real character flaw. It’s not a fancy museum, but it’s worth a visit, particularly if you are a fan of Wagner’s music or the late Romantic era.
