This is a well preserved gate and part of a wall that used to be part of the city of Arnhem. It must have been restored after WWII because some of the old buildings in the center of the city, not far from the gate, still have damage (bullet holes) from the war. Well worth seeing if visiting Arnhem.

De stadspoort is een van de vroegere vier stadspoorten. Gebouwd omstreeks het jaar 1350. Het bouwwerk heeft ook dienstgedaan als gevangenis. Herbouwd na de Slag om Arnhem. Het bouwwerk maakt nu deel uit van het Provinciehuis van Gelderland.

De Sabelspoort (of Eusebiuspoort) is een van de vier stadspoorten uit het middeleeuwse Arnhem.
De oorspronkelijke poort dateert uit het begin van de 14e eeuw en maakte deel uit van een met een hoog ommuurde burcht.
De poort werd in het midden van de 17e verbouwd en kreeg het huidige aanzicht.
Na volledig beschadigd te zijn geraakt tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, werd de poort gelukkig in de 50-er jaren van de vorige eeuw herbouwd.

This is a preserved medieval gate, of which there was once four, from the Middle Ages there to protect Arnhem from the east. Sabelspoort also acted as a prison and insane asylum for a period as much as it was a defence point.

At first glance I thought it was a replica, as it looks rather new. Seeing the pictures of Sabelsgate in 1945 it was in a very bad state due to war damage. It has been meticulously restored. Originally a medieval gate, part of a castle structure, it had already lost its defensive function in the 17th century. The beautiful Renaissance style facade at the city side dates from 1642 and served a more decorative purpose. The building is used by the provincial authorities and closed to the public.
Most plausible explanation of the name: 'sabel' also spelled as 'savel' meaning sand may have been related to the presence of a sandy shoal in the river Rhine nearby.

Auf dem Weg zur John-Frost-Brücke kommt man unweigerlich am Sabelspoort vorbei. Das alte Stadttor wird heute als Teil des Provinzhauses genutzt.

While the relics of Saint Eusebius are at the Cathedral in Utrecht, this place is where history can be felt, and is well worth visiting to just look upon it (and pause for prayer).
