Een indrukwekkende kerk die de moeite waard is, niet alleen om het orgel, maar ook om enkele andere bezienswaardigheden, zoals de ingemetselde kanonskogel, de vloer die samengesteld is uit honderden grafstenen en de scheepsmodellen die aan het plafond hangen. Allemaal netjes uitgelegd en toegelicht in een foldertje dat je mee krijgt aan de ingang. Dat je hiervoor 3 euro toegangsgeld moet betalen is op zich aanvaardbaar. Dat daarboven op doorheen de kerk op heel veel plaatsen nog eens de extra wenk wordt gegeven om nog extra te doneren voor het onderhoud van de kerk, lijkt opportunistisch en is storend. Het is het ene of het andere, me dunkt. Ook storend is de armoedige aanduiding van de grafsteen van Frans Hals in het hoogkoor. Daar moet toch nog iets mee te doen zijn om dit meer in de kijker te zetten. Kortom: prachtige kerk, maar een creatieve geest kan hier nog meer uithalen!

Erg mooie en grote kerk. De buitenkant is al indrukwekkend, maar de binnenkant ook. Ik vond vooral het houten plafond erg mooi. Verder goede informatie, vriendelijk personeel en een nette entreeprijs.

It's worth a visit and is only 3 euros to do so. Some really good stained glass windows and surprisingly, 3 large ship models hung from the ceiling.

We visited this church, which forms an imposing sight and centre piece on the town Market Square (Grote Markt)
The cathedral is located in the most vibrant area in Haarlem with lots of shops, restaurants bars and outdoor cafes.
The architectural style is of Gothic style and became the main church of Haarlem during the 15th century.

Une église magnifique. Les orgues sont exceptionnelles et les vitraux de toute beauté.. une belle lumière baigne le bâtiment .. nous y avons passé une heure sans voir passer le temps .. une visite incontournable à Haarlem

Sint-Bavokerk, the Church of St. Bavo, sits on Grote Markt Square. It was constructed between 1370 and 1520 in the Gothic-style as a cathedral. It is the largest church in Haarlem and dominates the square.
When the Netherlands underwent the Protestant Reformation, it became a Protestant church in 1578, and today it is an Evangelical-United parish church.
This is the church that contains the famous Müller organ. This gigantic instrument occupies one wall and contains more than 5,000 pipes, many dating from 1738. Over the years, numerous famous musicians have played this organ, including Mendelssohn, Händel, and the 10-year-old Mozart, who played it in 1766.
Like many churches, the influential people of the community were buried in the church. Some were placed beneath the floor under large family gravestones. Others were placed in the walls. Today the church floor is uneven since much of it is composed by these gravestones.
On the walls you can see the Family Crests of those interred there.
There is a story that only the rich could afford to be buried in the church. Regardless of wealth, the corpses rotted as they lay under the stone floor, producing a foul odor. This gave rise to the phrase "Stinking Rich".

Jolie cathédrale avec une voûte au bois rappelant la coque inversée d'un navire. Très joli. Vitraux sans intérêt majeur. La visite vaut surtout pour cet orgue phénoménal.

Haarlem is a 20 minute train ride from Amsterdam and almost different world. It is a "must see" or perhaps better "must experience" for anyone visiting Holland. We arrived at about 9:30AM and had the privilege of wandering through almost deserted--and clean--streets. The experience allowed us to soak up the city. Specific items of interest were Teylers Museum, Holland's oldest museum with an amazing, eclectic collection of scientific items and art; the Haarlem City Museum, the Church of St. Bavo, and the windmill museum and tour.

I found this place through Rick Steve's guide to the Netherlands, and it helped us enjoy every interesting architectural and artistic flourish. Make sure you find the "pillar biters" and the column marking the shortest and tallest men in Haarlem. The dog whipper's chapel was cool and the plaque denoting that Mozart played the organ in this church at age 10. We sat and listened to the organ music for a few minutes and you can feel the vibrations through your feet. There are organ concerts twice per week but we didn't stay as it was an extra cost and we had already heard the organ playing. We were slightly disappointed that you can't see the working parts of the organ (where one would play the instrument). We grabbed some kibbeling from a stand outside in the market square, just mind the seagulls. We walked all around the exterior of the church. Make sure and check out the stalls around the outside of the church, too. Many are cheap souvenirs but we found a gem of an art gallery, too. This is an easy walk to the train station.

Grote Kerk, the Old Church, in Haarlem is a must see. The fantastic organ stands 100 feet tall, has over 5,000 pipes, and has a glorious sound if you are lucky enough to be there when it is being played. We caught a practice session but there are also concerts. Much of its original splendor was taken out during the Protestant conversion but much still remains. The carvings along the base of the rood screen are worth the price of admission alone. The choir was closed but still much to be seen through the screen. Follow the guide they give you to find all the goodies. Rick Steves also has good suggestions on visiting. Nice little gift shop too with reasonably priced souvenirs for the church and Haarlem.

We plan to visit on July 2 and there is a concert on that day. Does the admission fee to the church include the concert? If not how do we get tickets and can they be purchased on line in advance?

Entering the church is €2.50 a person, which you can pay at the desk at the entrance. You won't have to pay extra to see the concert.
