The Belfort or Belfry is the iconic landmark in the center of Bruges. It’s a medieval bell tower built around the year 1240. We bought tickets online for a Tuesday 9:40 time slot. The booking system is super easy because it tells you how many tickets are left for each time slot, and you don’t need to book too far in advance. There weren’t too many people when we went but there were already people coming back down.
There are some areas of the climb that are narrow, so just be mindful of that. It took us about 15 minutes to get to the top and when you get up there, it is so cool! You see the actual bell (beware, it’s LOUD, obviously since you’re right next to it) and you can look down on the square. Although it’s not a complete 360 view since the bell blocks some of the access, it’s still a sight to see. The whole experience from going up, taking photos at the top, coming back down took us about 45 minutes. It did start getting a bit more crowded when we were heading back down, so my recommendation is to go early.
Definitely a must see if you’re in Bruges!

The Tower of freedom can be seen from any angle of the town. Be early or better make an online reservation. Look for weather conditions, if you want to see the beautiful city from up there. 366 steps lead you up, twice you have a small interrupt, the different bells, the "Glockenspiel ", highest point the huge bells.

Pleasingly, the 300+ steps to the top of the tower are punctuated by several floors where visitors can rest and (in most cases) review the interesting content or mechanical mechanisms etc.
The vsitor flow is well managed and we barely passed others as we climbed up/down the tower.
Visitor tips: Try to time your visit so that you get to experience one of the 'significant chimes' of the bells while at the top. I'd imagine the optimum is to be in the mechanism room just ahead of the 3/4 hour and at the top on the hour.
Great 360 degree views of Bruges from the top once you're up there.
If there was any criticism of the attraction, i'd say that the first (or perhaps second - can't recall) floor would benefit from some more 'museumy' content in its large open space. But don't let this put you off.

Belfort (Bell Tower) has stood over the Markt square since 1300. The tower gas 47 bells that chime periodically. Every 15 minutes, the carillon plays a little ditty. But the best bell music experience is at the top of the hour. Open daily for public 9 am -20 pm, 15 euros, you can visit to enjoy a fine view over the city and carillon close-up, but keep in mind you have to climb 366 steps.
Some morning or summer/fall evening, you can sit in the courtyard or out on the Markt square to enjoy a free carillon concerts. The schedule is clearly posted inner courtyard. Also here is a pay public WC (useful info for tourists). Yes!!

Unlike the Belfry in Ghent, one has to physically climb up the stairs to reach the top. It was genuinely a physical exertion. There are exhibitions that explain the drums, the history of the building itself, and the bell, but, these were all lacklustre. The view is slightly compromised by being in the actual bell-tower. Unlike in Ghent, the view is obscured by brown chains covering the windows. If you stay at the quarter hour, one can listen to the bells chime. I remember it being quite loud and having to cover my ears! Nevertheless, it was an unforgettable experience, listening to the bells, overlooking a nice panorama of the city (note: I have seen much nicer panoramas of European cities, for free).

Roughly, how many steps are between landings? Or how many landings among 366 steps? Just concerned I'd be holding other climbers up!!

After the ticket hall there are (I think) 4 stretches of steps before you reach the top. The third stretch (up to the carillon mechanism) is the longest stretch and it’s about 150 steps. The final stretch between the mechanism and the top is the steepest and narrowest but it’s only about 50 steps so not too much.

I believe that there are different prices for adults and children at Belfort.
Most hotels in Bruges will provide you with a small card that gives you various discounts at museums and attractions in Brugge. Two different hotels I stayed at both gave me this.

For an adult it is around €10. If you are under the age of 26/25 you can get in for €8.00 but you must show your driving licence for proof of age. I hope this helps! the steep climb is worth the panoramic view :)!
