Beautiful walk and perfect for families especially with young children. We took a hiking bag for our 10 month old and our 3 year old was able to walk the whole way there and back. It’s really flat and not very long at all - took us approx. 30 mins each way, with a distracted 3yr old who loved the tunnel looking parts! The view is breath taking - you come around the corner and we were lucky in that it was a beautiful day so we could see everything. We walked around 10-10.15am, and the path was quiet and peaceful. However when walking back, bus tours had begun to arrive and it was getting really busy which I can imagine means the balcony bit could become overcrowded. There is a snack bar half way up - we didn’t eat here but it looked reasonable. We had a car so drove to the destination which was easy enough to do from Calheta, and we then went on to visit some other places. Parking was straight forward as we were there early enough before the rush.
Would highly recommend if our exploring for the day, especially if a beautiful day, and have children in tow!

This is an absolutely stunning viewpoint with the forested mountains on one side and view down to the sea on the other. Spectacular! It is reached by a lovely easy levada walk from Ribeira Frio; there is a little shop to buy water/snacks, with a toilet, partway. You might also be lucky to see the local chaffinches, of which there are plenty in a colony.

Very easy and flat walk along nice wide paths. You do need to watch your footing for rocks and tree roots, but anyone can do this walk. Most things we read beforehand said it took between 35 and 45 minutes each way, but we did it in 25, not walking fast. It's only 1.5km each way. There are a lot of large tour groups on the path so it's not that peaceful, but we were reliant on the bus timetables. If you can get there under your own steam, try and go early in the morning to avoid the endless stream of people. We took bus 56 departing at 10am from the bus stand near the cable car in Funchal. Get to the stop early, other reviewers are not lying when they say the bus is very popular! Our bus was full and I overheard the driver say they'd put on another bus, but this can't be guaranteed. Our bus kept stopping on the way up for some kind of mechanical problem so it took 55 mins there, but it seems it's usually between 45 and 50 minutes. You can't miss the stop, everyone gets off the bus at John's poncha shop for the walk, and the Balcoes lookout is signposted. On our return we were in the queue for the return bus 56 to Funchal half an hour early. The bus was scheduled for 1:15pm and hadn't turned up by 1:35pm, and it was 34 degrees, so when a taxi driver turned up quoting €4 per person to share his minibus back to Funchal, we jumped at the offer. It may be worth clubbing together with other travellers to do this anyway as it is virtually the same cost as the €3.35 pp bus fare. I'm not sure it's worth going out of your way for this walk as it's really short and the bus is long and a bit unreliable, but a good option if you've got half a day to kill and want to get out of the centre.

Visited here on a tour of the east side. A gentle walk along a lavada then came to a viewing balcony. Absolutely stunning views.

Notre guide nous a déposé à un bout et expliqué comment on le retrouverait un peu plus bas. Cette Levada n'était pas à notre programme car trop facile. Comme elle est facile, les bus n'hésitent pas à y lâcher des foules de touristes.
Ceci dit, la balade est agréable et le point de vue aussi.

Vereda dos Balcões de Ribeiro Frio (PR11) is highly recommended as a very easy 3km hike on a very good flat path; 1.5kms to the viewpoint and then back.
From Funchal take Nos 56, 103 or 138 buses to Santana and disembark at Ribeiro Frio. I read that the cost is €2.75 each but for the convenience and hour saved we took a Bolt direct from our hotel just outside of Funchal for €21. From the bus stop, walk a little way downhill to find the track on the left, which is signposted for Balcões, just past the start of the Ribeiro Frio to Portela walk on your right.
A wide, level path takes you along the levada (irrigation channel), through a forest and past a very rustic café before leading you onto a viewing platform with incredible views over the Ribeira da Metade valley. In addition, you’ll see the Laurisilva forest, classified as a World Heritage by UNESCO. The island’s highest peaks, Pico do Areeiro, Pico do Gato, and Pico das Torres, are also visible.
This is a lovely little walk through the forest and then you are rewarded with absolutely amazing views! Suitable for pretty much everyone, there is no reason not to go on this walk - you could even manage it with a sturdy pram! We set off very early to avoid the crowds and there was only a couple more people at the view point, on the way back however we passed several couples/families.
Tip: Take bread from breakfast to feed the very friendly birds here.
Located in Ribeiro Frio natural park. The mountains are covered in thick forest, and you’ve got a view all the way out to the sea on a clear day. Note: this area is very prone to mist and cloud cover, so plan in advance and check visibility on NetMadeira before making the drive.
I read that the Ribeiro Frio Restaurant near the entrance to the walk to the Vereda dos Balcões is highly recommended and also very reasonably priced. The prego (Madeiran steak sandwich) is very popular and made here with Bolo do Caco bread which is delicious. However, half way towards the Vereda dos Balcões (viewpoint) there is a rustic cafe which looked lovely, we would have visited but it was still early morning and we had a long day of hiking ahead of us (and full packed lunches in our backpacks).
We combined this short walk with the longer Levada do Furado (PR10), which finishes in Portela. This was hard work as I was heavily pregnant but I loved this hike so much. Walking past many little waterfalls and even underneath a couple! There were narrow walkways to traverse with precipices on one side! and even short dark caves to walk through! This walk really had it all and we definitely suggest combing these two levada walks as we did.

Is Ribeiro easy to get to by car? And is there definitely spaces to park?
I’ve read mixed reviews on this, so just wanting to double check.

Yes, it is very easy to get to the trailhead, and you park on the roadside. We had no issues parking, but it is definitely a time of day thing as we read that at times parking is full. The roads are narrow and winding, but not an issue if you have had any mountain driving experience. There are several parking areas along the road nearby, so if the area directly at the trailhead (directly next to the restaurant on the opposite side of the road), there is more parking within a few hundred meters of the trail before and after it.
