This is a small, cozy establishment (one we might call a "hole in the wall" in the U.S.), but you shouldn't overlook it. It's a fantastic spot to stop in for a cold beer or a glass of vinho...and beware the ponchas, because they will sneak up on you!
The menu is limited to traditional bar snacks like tostas and light tapas, but don't miss their tuna pâté. I don't know what they do to it, but it's almost magical.
The owner and his wife are always lovely and welcoming, and they'll meet you more than halfway with English if you don't know Portuguese. You've got to check out this little gem when in Funchal!

Alex is the best bartender/proprietor you could ask for in your basic divebar. But what great food/snacks along with the drinks.
Find your way to Monumental in the Madeira Palace neighborhood. Me and my wife, and my dog, will probably be hanging out drinking Poncha, eating the chourico, and tuna toast, and ice cold Coral (Madeira's own pilsner)

Bonjour à tous avons découvert se bar accueil tres chaleureux et il parle le francais avons pris un verre de ponchas fait maison très très bon
Le patron et son employé parle le français. Il se trouve pas loin de hôtel pestana royal ,quand vous sortent de hôtel prennent à droite monte la pente il se trouve trottoirs à gauche

If you are dying of dehydration or simple starving to death, drop by here.
They make some of the best poncha on the island. Or, if beer is more to you liking, stop by for a pint (or in my case, 2 small stout bottles poured in a pint glass).
If you are famished, treat yourself to a Sanduíche de carne em vinha d'alhos. Every bite is a taste of heaven.
So, if you are half dead from thirst or just famished, stop by here, they may just save your life.

Wow what a find, such a fantastic place. Strolled across this bar with my husband and what a fantastic find, lovely people, lovely family so welcoming would recommend to anyone drinks very good reasonably priced and the white wine was lovely, bar snacks better than the hotel where we were staying which was supposed to be 5 stars, oh and the best poncha around. Would definitely recommend also Paulo (may have got name wrong) kindly place an order and even collected our pizza so we could stay and have another drink
