The Fethiye Mosque is not to be confused with the much larger, Tzisdarakis Mosque on Monastiriki Square which now houses the Greek Folk Art Museum. Some of the pictures for this TA listing show the wrong mosque.
The two mosques are very close to each other but look quite different. The Fetihye Mosque, built during Turkish Ottoman rule in the mid 17th century, is about 100 years older and is much smaller.
We happened upon it on our way to the Roman Agora. It’s just around the corner from the Tower of the Winds.
What you see here is a relatively simple rectangular building with an arched portico on one side and a striking combination of domes. A central main dome stands tallest and is surrounded by half-domes and small corner domes, all in terracotta red tiles.
After the end of Ottoman rule, the mosque was re-purposed as military barracks, a prison, a bakery, and then a warehouse for ancient artefacts. More recently it has undergone a restoration project and was reopened in 2017. Apparently it now hosts exhibitions, although it looked like work was still going on and we couldn’t see any signs for upcoming exhibitions. It was therefore only a very brief stop and a quick look on our way to the Roman Agora.

The Fethiye Mosque (Mosque of the Conqueror), was built in the 17th century, in the northern part of the Roman Agora, opposite the "Aerides". After the Turkish occupation it was used as a starter bakery and then used as a warehouse for excavation findings of the Agora and the Acropolis. In 2010 it was cleared of antiquities, renovated and used as an exhibition space. However, it was closed when we went.

Les plus beaux édifices religieux d'Athènes sont sans conteste les mosquées. Alors que les Byzantins ont rompu totalement avec l'héritage grec antique en en prenant l'exact contre-pied (l'obscurité contre la clarté, la laideur picturale contre la beauté idéalisée, la cavité contre l'ouverture, etc.), les artistes islamiques ont intégré le meilleur de l'art antique en lui donnant une élégance, une légèreté et une virtuosité extraordinaires. Que l'on observe par exemple le porche de cette mosquée, ou que l'on compare la mosquée de la place Monastiraki à la chapelle byzantine voisine (la supériorité éclatante de la première saute aux yeux).

We actually had best views of this impressive former place of worship while strolling along Pelopida on the northeast side of the Agora.
It’s an impressive construct, originating from around the mid-1600s. It was interesting to learn that its predecessor mosque was built on a Byzantine Basilica in the mid-1400s very shortly after Athens fell to the Ottomans.
After Greek independence it fell into some dereliction. But thankfully, after renovations, it now hosts special cultural exhibitions but was not open at our visit.

Das Gebäude war mal eine Moschee hat aber mit einer solchen nichts mehr zu tun. Es handelt sich einfach um ein Gebäude in dem Ausstellungen gemacht werden. Alles islamische wurde komplett entfernt.

Atina'da Plaka bölgesinde bulunan iki Osmanlı Camisinden biri olan Fethiye Cami, kapalı olduğu için giremedik. Fatih Sultan Mehmed'in Atina'yı fethi zamanın da yapılmış. İbadete kapalı olması, dini mekânlar için doğru bir hareket değil.

Fethiye Mosque is located in the area of Roman Agora, just next to the Tower of Winds. We were not able to see much of it as it was closed and no info what is the history of this building.

Praticamente all'interno dell'agorà romana è situata questa moschea Ottomana del XVII sec. Viene chiamata moschea della Conquista ed è stata costruita sulle rovine di una basilica cristiana.....infatti prima era dedicata a questo culto, successivamente fu convertita in moschea dopo la conquista ottomana di Atene.

Roman Agora sit alanı içinde bununan mu kutsal mekan 1458 yılında Fatih Sultan Mehmet'in şehri fethetmesinin anısına inşa edilmiş. Agora ile beraber 3 Euro ücret karşılığında ziyaret etmeniz mümkün. İbadete kapalı olduğunu da belirtmemde fayda var.
