I agree thompsons trips are always very expensive.
Is that right that you can just turn up at the dock side and book just the boat to take you to the island, and if so how long do you get on the island.and ,do u pay to get on to the island.

The island you also need to pay for otherwise you can't visit it. Our stay on the island was about 1½ hour before we needed to go.
Hi - we are staying in Agios Nickolaus in Sept and would like to visit Spinalonga. Ive read that its easy to go from Plaka and catch the ferry but do buses run from Agios N. to Plaka and if not how much would taxi be. Thanks

Hi there, we are visiting Crete September 2016. My Wife wants to visit Spinalonga after reading "The Book" After reading reviews it has convinced me to read it as well before we go! Many reviews have said its vital to do the tour with a guide on the Island, which I can appreciate, also many have said they would have preferred longer there. We will have a car, so can we drive to one of the departure ports for a boat to the Island and get a guide and then return when we please or do we have to take one of the organised tours which pick you up from your hotel, the boat crossing, Island tour, BBQ and swim etc to get a guide? There seems to be a big difference in price for the packaged day out as against doing it independently, as there will be four of us.
Many thanks in advance, Kevin

Just read your question and as we have only just returned from Crete would offer this advice. If you have a car drive to Plaka a short way further down the coast but easy to fine. The are two free car parks as you enter the village, these are only a couple of minutes walk down to the small harbour. For 8 euros each the chaps down there will take you across to the island a trip of about 10 minutes, they also go right around the island whereas the larger boats just drop you off. No real need to go in a group as you get a better chance to look around. One piece of advice go early to miss the crowds and heat, also get better photos as not many people around. You can catch any boat to Plaka for your return so not time limited. Hope you and your wife enjoy.
