Graphic the old town of Rethymnon, small alleys, courtyards and palaces, Venetian buildings and minarets next door jewelry doors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Small squares on pedestrian streets with openings, polite and smiling shopkeepers. In March was especially pleasant to walk without crowds.

A lovely town with many good restaurants, which are located in small cozy streets and along the small harbour. There are also some shops. A visit worth especially in the evening.

Beautiful , versatile and cozy city. Nice shopping streets, plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. Now decorates cozy at Christmas and also this period there is still plenty open to enjoy. Miles of beach with plenty of restaurants. Nice castle. Good base to visit everything near Rethymnon. Both in summer and now in December definitely worth a stay.

Rethymno is an absolute gem of Crete, a place where history, beauty, and charm come together in perfect harmony. The old town is like stepping into a fairytale, with its winding alleys, Venetian architecture, and vibrant colors. The Fortezza offers breathtaking views of the sea and the town, a must-visit for history and photography lovers.

Looking at the ‘hard goods’ – that is, the stone, like buildings – the first impression is: Great! In the narrow, labyrinthine streets you will find a lot of substance of well-preserved or sensitively renovated old buildings. It is a pleasure to walk here and you hardly get anywhere because you always find interesting things.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to find buildings here, where one wonders which rich banause had this building built. And also: how could a building authority allow such a thing?; and following on from that: how much money did the client once have to pay to a building authority – or to an important official – that the construction of this object was approved?
Looking at the ‘software’ of this district: That is, the people. Or more precisely: the flair and atmosphere created by people in an urbanity. In this regard, a realization has blossomed with me, which I owe to my travels to this wonderful country.
I was in GR for the first time 50 years ago and I experienced people here who were enthusiastic about life in all the cities we visited. It was a pleasure and I experienced this in many of the following years.
However, the situation today has changed dramatically.
Philoxenia, the love of strangers, is considered one of the fundamental traits of Greekness, and it is precisely that that that has been completely lost on the people of this city. With a staring face, tunnel vision and plugs in your ears, you rush around and rush through the alleys and corridors at high speed. There is no smile on their faces. The words For Pleasure (Parakaló, Παρακαλώ) and Thanks (Ευχαριστώ, Evcharistó) are also rarely heard. A state of joylessness and indifference has emerged here.
Our experience today: If we were given a smile in the pedestrian zone or in the old town streets, then this was just the start of a conversation through which our ‘partner’ wanted to get ‘into business’ with us. Tourists are apparently the more common addressees of such approaches, but we do not interpret such behavior as racism. Indeed, we could observe that these ‘tugboats’ do no different with their compatriots.
Conclusion: You have to take Rethymnon as it is and strive to overcome the closedness of people. We managed to do this several times when we conveyed some words in Greek to our counterparts. We have seen surprising changes in people on several occasions. One of our bus drivers showed a grim face and when we (the only ones) thanked him when he got off, he beamed all over his face.

We visited the old town of Rethymnon on a rainy day and we really liked it! I imagine it's nice to walk there all year round and all seasons!

Very pretty place with more shops than the typical Cretan souvenir shops.
We were saddened by the many stray cats. Is there no one on site to take care of sterilization/castration?
Partly the restaurants probably feed, we also did it with bought cat food (food leftovers are too much seasoned and chicken bones deadly pointed - please don't give) but the animals would be helped more if not so many offspring were born on the streets. Everyone was so sweet and often trusting.

Hi. Are many cheaper restaurants accepting cash or insisting on card payment.

We paid a mixture of cash and card. TBH they are so happy tourists are back, they don't mind!

Hi everyone, we have visited Crete several times but now want to explore the opposite side to the island so looking to book in May 2020. Is 2 weeks too long to spend in Rethymno? We would most likely hire a car for adventuring but not sure if 1 week in Rethymno/1 week Chania would be better or 2 weeks in R. Any advise woudl be really welcome.

There is a sandy beach all along the front, but it is one of those crowded beaches with beds and brollies, the wind can be strong making for big waves and all this week the red no swimmer flags have been up. If you want calmer secluded beaches the best ones are on the islands other side. Two and a half hours bus ride, so recommend a hire car. Look out especially for Elafonissi beach, pink sands and blue lagoons.

Hi I am gong there in a few weeks time, any suggestions on places to visit. Also did you get a taxi or a bus to the village, as I have not sorted out my transfer from Chania.
Also thinking of hiring a car, is there any parking around

Hi, as we stayed in the middle of the island we rented a car from Chania Airport and drove all around the island. My advise is to park the car at the port of Rethimno. There is a free parking next to the paid one and the boats docks until 5 pm. Afterwards my advise is to use the paid parking. It is not expensive at all.

Обычно в описании отеля на том же Booking пишется про стоянки. Мы жили в Ретимно прямо у моря. Немного левее от нашего отеля, на небольшом пирсе она была. И вроде как бесплатная. Но небольшая, и машин там было куча. Сами были без машины, так что большей информации сказать не смогу)
