My Iceland itinerary got really messed up with several flights rescheduled, and Matti and Isak were great in staying flexible so I could still fish. Isak was my guide for a morning of Char fishing on the Langavatn. Isak was friendly, knowledgeable, and more-than-patient while detangling several double-nymph birdsnests. Highly recommend this service in North Iceland.

I went on a 12 hour fishing trip with my dad and Don was our guide. He was very knowledgeable and was very pleasant to be around. I had only been fly fishing once and he taught me some great techniques that helped me catch lots of fish. If you are looking for a great fishing experience in Iceland, Don is your guy!

Don guided my daughter an I for an unforgettable fly fishing trip for Artic Char and Trout. Don has more passion and love for guiding than any other guides we have experienced across the world! He patiently worked with my daughter to teach her to fly fish. He also provided me with a lot of great techniques which I will utilize for years to come. We felt as though we were fishing with a friend and a wise teacher. Thanks Don! We look forward to hire you in the future for a multi day trip! Best, Chris

Don the guide was a great friend by the time our full-day fishing trip had to end. He was patient with our beginners and open-minded and helpful to the more experienced anglers in our family! An experience we will never forget! Don’s personality perfectly matched ours and made us laugh, cry and cheer all day! I would love to spend more time with him fishing or not! Who am I kidding? Fishing is what he loves too!

Went out on Oct. 3 for Salmon fishing on the West Ranga. Christian was my guide and he was very knowledgeable about the area and where to fish. It was only me going out and was booked last minute, so I appreciate the responsiveness of the owner and accommodating my travel schedule to set up a day of fishing.

I am not an experienced fly fisherman, so this was a big learning experience for me, but the guide was patient and worked very closely to teach me how to use the different types of fly rods. It was late in the season, so knew the fishing may not be good, but it was still an amazing experience and I would definitely use this guide service again. Especially if you're a more experienced angler, but they can still help with less experienced.

Fished the Laxa and Lonsa rivers with guide, Gilbert Jonssen. Great sense of humor, patient instructor, superior knowledge of fishing spots and "the hatch."He stopped at beautiful and interesting waterfalls, thermal pools and canyons on the way. 5 day trip. Caught brown trout and artic char. Stayed in 2 nice guest houses. Iceland food is, well... Iceland food. Gilbert ate a whale steak, but wouldn't eat the horse burger.

Trip involved a lot of walking through spongy tundra flora. You must train by walking in the weeks leading up to your trip.

Fished Alaska last year, and the midnight sun in Iceland in July does not get dusky!

This must be the ultimate venue for fishing for salmon in Iceland! Perfect river and varied beats. Matti was a first class guide who went out of his way to make sure a novice caught several fish over three days.....I must return! Richard

I fished 2.5 days with Matti and caught 3 Atlantic salmon.....I was thrilled!!! I contacted Matti a year before going to Iceland and he communicated with me many times by email and we even talked by phone several times to discuss what I wanted to fish for and he told me exactly what I needed to bring. Matti, Daniel and Gilbert were as excited and enthusiastic as I was and they all worked very hard to meet my needs and make my trip a success. The accommodations were great and the food that Oskar prepared was delicious! I had always wanted to catch an Atlantic salmon and I realized just how difficult this could be so after my first fish everything else was frosting on the cake. I caught 2 salmon 80 cm. and a third that was 62 cm.

During my discussions with Matti he learned that I was staying a night at another of his rivers he manages. He offered me a day to fish that river at no extra charge which I really appreciated.

The salmon fishing on the Myrarkvisl is physically changing but we'll worth your effort. Two recommendations I would make prior to fishing this river:
1. Be in shape and ready to climb in and out of canyons to the fishing holes.
2. Listen to your guides and do EXACTLY what they tell you. They know what they are doing and you can be successful if you listen to their suggestions.

My goal was to catch a salmon and my goal was met x 3. We caught a few brown trout (accidentally) and saw several larger ones (4-5 lbs) but we targeted the salmon since they were running. I am confident that Matti and his guides could show anyone a great time catching trout, char and salmon. This was a trip of a lifetime I certainly fulfilled my bucket list with Matti.

TL;DR; If you want a personalized fishing experience in a unique environment to catch Arctic Char, big Brown Trout (or Searun and Seatrout) and Atlantic Salmon, don’t hesitate to reach out to Iceland Fishing Guide. They have over delivered for me.

I reached out 6 months ago to Matti, the founder of Iceland Fishing Guide to get a proposal for 6 days of fishing in July 2019. I wanted to fish for Arctic Char, Brown Trout and Salmon. Within a few hours I had received a polite response from him, telling me that he would provide a detailed proposal a few days later. That’s exactly what he did and his offer was not only very appealing but also very competitive. We exchanged many emails to fine tune the travel plans. Matti was always very reactive and willing to answer my questions. I appreciated that he was not overly friendly at first, to the point and courteous.

A few days before the trip, we finalized the location for my guide to pick me up and the time. Also very important to me, the guide was there early and ready to hit the road right away. That gave me a good first impression.

We went straight to the first river I would fish for 3 days, the Lonsá near Þórshöfn. My guide explained clearly the technique I would be using there to catch Brown Trout and Arctic Char. It really didn’t take long before I was on my first fish, an Arctic Char. What a strong chunky fish! Be prepared to strip a lot of line as you generally cast upstream and need to stay in contact with your pink nymph. Yes, you fish nymphs like a streamer!

Something I was not expecting was that not only I fished alone on a river all for myself during the day (what a privilege), but after dinner and based on the tides, we would go to the estuary of that same river. There, I caught a Searun Brown Trout, a fresh silver Arctic Char and a Seatrout! That was completely unexpected and catching these fish after 11:30pm in a country where the sun doesn’t fully go down was quite unique.

The guesthouse there was very comfortable and the meals were delicious, Arctic Char or lamb. It’s right on the river and could not be more convenient.

The next 3 days, I fished near their main lodge on the Myrarkvisl. I like to prepare my trips very well. One thing that I completely missed from what I’ve read or the videos on Youtube was how spectacular the river is with its canyons. You can sight fish for Salmon. First you spot them from high up, then go closer to them and finally you cast from a small spot of dirt or grass alongside the cliff. Catching a large fish in these circumstances is absolutely amazing and something I will never forget!

The guides know the river like the back of their hands and can spot fish 10 minutes before you do. Once they know you a bit more, they will come up with the right strategy to approach the fish and give you the best shot at it. I caught 7 in 3 days thanks to them. They will change the flies as many times as necessary to get you the fish you see. It worked for me over 60% of the time. It was a team effort, the guide as a coach, you as the player. Good listening and team communication is very important there. I had no problem with my guide.

I should say that the river has more to offer that just canyons which require a somewhat good physical condition and a bit of experience with fly fishing. I like to call myself an advanced beginner with a total number of days fly fishing since I started in the 30 to 40 days and I managed to have a lot of fun. Just listen to your guide! The lower part of the river and the upper part are less physical with plenty of space to cast. It’s a joy to cast down and across, and strip the line in slow long pulls. They have fly boxes full of local traditional salmon flies.

The lodge there is simple but very comfortable and convenient, located right on the river. The general manager/cook of the lodge prepared very good breakfast, lunch and dinners, and even makes his own beer which you are looking forward to, after a long day on the water! It’s also great to have a break in the middle of the day for a nap and recover from the emotions of the morning.

After all of this, what could they do better? Not much, maybe just plan for some time to practice for hitching for example before being on the side of a cliff :). Otherwise, Matti and the guides were very professional, approachable but all in all absolutely passionate to have you catch fish. That makes the perfect conditions to have the best time of your life fishing for salmonids!
