Auf dem Weg über den Mönchsberg kommt man an dieser historischen Wehranlage vorbei. An dieser Stelle stand ab dem 13. Jhd schon eine Sperrmauer, welche die Stadt schützte. Diese Engstelle war ein Schwachpunkt in der Befestigung. Heute schön renoviert und leicht zu besichtigen. Auch die Aussicht ist an vielen Stellen sehr schön.

Salzburg has been wealthy for many centuries and thus had to be protected from incursions and invaders. Thus numerous city walls and fortifications were constructed from the 13th century onwards.
The Burgerwehr is the most impressive aspect remaining of the late medieval constructions.
Built in 1487 it was positioned on the narrowest area of Monchsberg, essentially following the line of the Sigmundstor tunnels at ground level. It functioned in conjunction with the impressive Gstättentor city gate.
Eventually eight towers were added and these are still preserved today. These plus the robust crenellations all add to evocations of past times and the protections that were essential to repel attackers.
