Albertinaplatz is the intersection of 6 streets. It received its name only in 1934 after the names of the museum of the same name. The dominant feature of the square is the bastion, on which stands an equestrian monument to Archduke Albrecht. In fact, these are the remains of a bastion demolished along with the Vienna fortress wall during the grandiose reconstruction of Vienna at the beginning of the reign of Franz Joseph I. The square is surrounded by palaces and former apartment buildings. If you have time, you can visit the famous cafe "Mozart". There used to be a monument to the great composer here, but in 1953 it was moved to the Burggarten. The Albrecht Fountain also reminds of the old imperial Vienna. Less noticeable, but historically significant is the memorial to the victims of war and fascism by sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka, erected relatively recently in 1988. It stands on the site of the infamous Philipp Hof house, in whose bomb shelter on March 12, 1945, about 300 residents of Vienna suffocated or boiled from boiling water by firefighters extinguishing a fire. Some of the corpses were removed, the rest remained buried under the square formed at the demolition site. However, this is not only a reminder of the bombing on March 12, 1945, but also a reminder of the Anschluss on March 12, 1938, when the people of Vienna welcomed their compatriot (and Vienna resident) Hitler. The figure of a Jew on all fours recalls the shameful episode when the Viennese forced Jews to wash away anti-Nazi slogans from the sidewalks of the city. Formally, this part of the square has been a square named after the former mayor of Vienna, Helmut Zilk, who supported the construction of the memorial since 2009. However, I'm afraid even the Viennese themselves can't make out where what square is, not like us tourists.

Direkt bei der Albertina - und ziemlich eindrucksvoll mit der schwebenden Konstruktion. Von hier aus kann man eine Menge Sehenswürdigkeiten betrachten - oder rasch hinkommen. Sehr viel Verkehr, daher nicht wirklich gastlich.

You can find here the albertina museam, as well as the war memorial gates of violence, the view to opers house and great buildings all around. Very busy area and great coffea houses around closed due to covid.

There are larger and busier squares in Vienna, but this small square is where the Albertina museum is located, as well as an impressive sculpture, The Gate of Violence.

Венская площадь Альбертина, наряду со Stephansplatz является своеобразным туристическим «сердцем» австрийской столицы. Как правило, практически все венские туристические маршруты так или иначе проходят через Albertinaplatz. Свое название площадь получила от дворца, возведенного в 1781 году для эрцгерцога Альберта Казимира Августа Саксонского, герцога Тешенского, младшего сына польского короля Августа III и Марии Йозефы Австрийской, последнего наместника Австрийских Нидерландов. Его Светлость прославился как неутомимый собиратель графики и гравюр, составивших крупнейшее собрание такого рода – венскую Альбертину. На этой же площади вы сможете без труда отыскать фрагменты старых городских укреплений Вены, которые перестроены в рампу. Последнюю венчает конный монумент эрцгерцога Альбрехта Фридриха Рудольфа Австрийского, военачальника и военного теоретика, умудрившегося заполучить звание генерал-фельдмаршала сразу трёх армий: австрийской, русской и прусской. Авторами этого монумента являются немецкий скульптор Каспар Клеменс Эдуард фон Цумбуш (сама статуя) и архитектор Карл Кёниг (композиции пьедестала). На этой же площади находятся легендарный отель «Захер» (с его кафе, где можно «заточить» всемирно известный одноимённый шоколадный торт) и не менее популярная среди туристов старейшая венская кофейня «Моцарт», ведущая свою историю с 1794 года!!! Нельзя пройти мимо Мемориала против войны и фашизма (Mahnmal gegen Krieg und Faschismus). Последний, автором которого является австрийский скульптор, художник, график, шахматист и писатель Альфред Хрдличка (Alfred Hrdlicka), ИМХО, явно диссонирующий с общим архитектурным обликом Albertinaplatz, размещён именно здесь не случайно: в 1945 году во время налёта авиации союзников был разрушен находившийся здесь жилой дом, под руинами которого в подвалах погибли сотни венцев. Ещё одним must see Альбертинаплатц является фонтан Альбрехта (Danubebrunnen), возведённый в 1869 году по проекту Морица фон Лёра (непосредственно гидротехническая составляющая) и Иоганна Мейкснера (скульптурная группа). Композиция изображает бога рек – Данубиуса (символизирующего Дунай), защищающего аллегорическую скульптуру Виндобоны (сиречь Вены). Рекомендую!!!

Around 400 people died in the cellar of a building on this square during the Second World war. The memorials here are against war and fascism and are truly moving, especially as they were so well explained by our walking tour guide.
I was particularly moved by the sculpture of the person cleaning the ground, as some Jews were forced to do during the war.
These memorials could do with explanations in languages other than German.But they are still worth visiting.
