Hello all, the museum exhibits the original raft from 1947. The mast broke and the hut was smashed upon crashlanding on the Raroia attoll after 101 days at sea. Islanders helped get the raft safe on land. After some consideration, Thor Heyerdahl decided against his initial idea of leaving the raft behind as a monument to the fact. The raft was first towed to Tahiti (this took 9 days) by a small schooner; and then transported to San Francisco on the Norwegian vessel "Thor I" to San Francsico. It was then brought on a shipping vessel to Antwerp, and then brought to Oslo. It is indeed the original vessel. The ropes were replaced 5 years ago, and in the exhibition you can see the process in a 5 - min film. Thank you for visiting!
