The Higgins is under a mile away from Bedford station on foot but we took a slightly longer route to take in the pleasant banks of the Great Ouse.
The current exhibition on show is called Changing Times - A Century Of Modern British Art.
This consisted of a collection of 80 or so pieces of art from the likes of Paul Nash, Lucien Freud, William Roberts, David Hockney, Eric Ravilious and CRW Nevinson.
There was also work by Kathe Kollwitz and a Cezanne lithograph.
We spent a pleasant hour or so browsing and admission was free.

The art gallery was being decorated when we visited so I am just reviewing the museum. There was plenty to see and we were really impressed with the standard and range of the exhibits; there were some seriously good items on show. The staff were friendly and we were greeted on arrival and given a guide. There is no entrance fee but there is a box with a suggested donation of £3. There was no pressure to donate but if you do £3 is very good value for money. If we visit Bedford again we call in for another visit because there is a lot to see in just one visit. I can thoroughly recommend this museum.

What a great place to visit - & it's free entry. A great museum charting the history of Bedford from prehistoric times, a free art exhibition plus a great little cafe/restaurant too. Something for all ages

La curiosidad de aventureros exploradores low cost nos llevó a uno de los museos más visitados de Bedford. Aquí descubrimos el arte de autores inspirados por la antigüedad de familias aristócrata . La sección de pintura 🎨 fue lo más importante de mi visita ya que pude empaparme de creatividad artística francesa. Lo recomiendo altamente.
The curiosity of adventurous low cost travellers took us directly to one of the most visited museums of Bedford. Here, we discovered the art of authentic authors inspired by antique aristocrat families. Artistic section was the most appealing one where it presented controversial painting 🖼 works. Could immerse myself in Fresno creativity. Highly recommended.

There are some really interesting artifacts, furniture and artworks on display at The Higgins, and I enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around.
However, you really do wander because the displays seem to follow no coherent order - they seem neither to follow any real chronology, nor are they thematically. ordered.
Whilst most exhibits are clearly presented, the overall experience feels too much of a salmagundi or hotchpotch for complete enjoyment.

Just visited the Higgins and we were very impressed. This is a really excellent county museum with some very interesting exhibits. We learnt a lot more about the history of Bedford and Bedfordshire. There is a very eclectic mix here and what with the gallery, collections of early glass and then the latest experiential work, Airship Dreams, you cannot put the Higgins into a ‘box with a label’. There’s something here for all to enjoy.
The experiential creation, Airship Dreams, is an impressive abstract work of 40 minutes to celebrate the achievement and the tragedy of the R101 Airship, built at Cardington. This is a good experience to complete your visit, a thought provoking meditation of some depth.

We popped in to see the airship display and we were not disappointed the museum is crammed full of interesting things about Bedford and the surrounding area, We do love to visit when we return to the town every so often, The staff as always were pleasant and helpful

An excellent blend of the loved traditional county museum and an art gallery, with the addition of the beautiful Georgian house. Bright, clean, very well interpreted. Refreshing lack of daft interactive exhibits that in many museums sit as relives to recent, bypassed technology and no longer work. Friendly staff and volunteers. Bawden collection worth the visit on its own. Shop has very good selection of unique cards based on the collections, ant the attached Italian restaurant (The Pantry) made delicious panino lunch and artisan ice cream. The Higgins is right next to the castle, the river and bridge and the charming St Paul’s Square. It’s free! Worth a visit to Bedford for half a day.
