What a lovely spot. The river Sid, plenty of walks and areas to enjoy. Apart from the drug dealers at the bottom, in the Sensory Gardens. We stayed at a house on Riverside Road, managed by Sweetcombe Holiday Cottages. The house was called Tarn, right opposite we enjoyed the noise and antics of Sidmouth’s friendly drug dealers, bongs in hand.
Hint: Don’t bother with Tarn on Riverside Road, don’t bother with Sweetcombe Holiday Cottages, don’t stay in Sidmouth if you aren’t a drill music fan who puffs from a bong. Oh, and the cops in the town take about two days to arrive.

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Sidmouth staying at the excellent Mount Pleasant Hotel (Review to follow) which is directly opposite the Byes Riverside Park.
Indeed this is one of the main factors behind our choice of accommodation as our friends live in Fortescue which is a 30 minute walk from our Hotel. Indeed, Sidmouth’s lovely Seafront - the main focal point for the majority of visitors - is only a comfortable 10 minute walk away.
As such, most of the people who regularly use the Byes are locals enjoying a walk - often with their children or dog(s). It is most walker-friendly with lovely scenery (including a nice river) and something many visitors are simply missing out on - a shame but part of the attraction is that it never feels too busy!

Walking all the byes was wonderful in great weather. so peaceful. Great for dog walking and dog owners very friendly.

A better option than walking or driving via the roadway into the town or to the seafront. There is a cycle track from Sidford. You can join or leave the walk in several places from Sidford onwards and enjoy the riverside and the lovely grassy areas and tree lined pathways .

So peaceful, lovely pleasant walk alongside the river Sid. Various paths and the opportunity to go into Sidmouth or the countryside/to the Coast path.

Sidmouth is a lovely Devon town, full of charm and great shopping. It also has some nice walks and the best we found is along the River Sid. Walk to the eastern end of the promenade (left as you look at the sea) and you will see the river winding up to your left. Cross the bridge and follow the river. You will pass steep embankments, weirs, and rural parks. There are several bridges so you can curtail your walk whenever. When you have walked enough cross over and return on the other side. Watch out for kingfishers and otters, though we didn't see any. You will see the early Toll House errected to pay for the road bridge. We walked for about 2.5 hours up and back and all was flat and mostly paved. Ideal for dogs, pushchairs and the elderly. A tad muddy in places in December.

A visit to 'The Byes' needs good weather, as there are no shelters of any sort in the park, but once you have a dry day there is lots to enjoy. We walked up from the south end as far as 'Margaret's Meadow' but you can walk all the way to Sidford if you wish.
One note of caution: There are as many dogs as people in 'The Byes' so it is not recommended if you do not like canine company.
