A town full of bookshops…with a castle.
This pretty little town on the border of Wales and England is well worth a visit for any book lovers out there. There are a huge number of bookshops with nearly every genre covered, both second hand and new. We spent a day here, but could easily have spent longer.
The only issue here was the map was confusing at times, leading to some rambling walks outside of town. The walks were not an issue for me personally but with my kids, walking along narrow lanes to the kids book shop (I would have driven if I’d know how far it was) with the way some of the idiots drove down the roads, it was hairy at times. An indication on the map of distances out of town would be helpful here.
The castle is a nice bonus. We stopped for some tea and a welsh tea cake (give that one a go, you’ll thank me), and explored the castle which took about an hour. There is a weird video at the start but unless you already know a little about the castle’s history it is useless.
With a quirky history, including a bid to become a republic it’s a fun place to visit.

An attractive town centre with lots of bookshops and quaint craft shops to browse and wander round. However, I was a little disappointed in the Hay bookshops generally, as I had an antique book in mind that I wanted to look at and check, and buy if it was the correct edition (including an engraving by my ancestor). One of the booksellers advertised online they had the book, but on arrival I was abruptly informed it was not in the shop, but in a warehouse somewhere, and offered no further assistance. I would have thought booklovers /sellers would have a bit more enthusiasm and knowledge and want to help customers.
Some of the shops did not seem to have catalogues or inventories of their stock, so another book I was looking for (Railways of the Raj) I was unable to find. However, the staff in one of the bookshops (Booths) were much more helpful and friendly, and were able to check stock on their database to save me a lot of time looking. If you are travelling some distance to look for specific titles, it is worth checking beforehand that the books are actually available on the premises.

The one to start with is Booths right in the centre of town, a converted chapel that has the same ambience as a place of worship, the book stacks like vertical pews. There is space in this shop unlike many other sellers that cram the shelves too close, and seats. Three floors allows you to get thoroughly immersed in the experience. The castle stacks are interesting too but not if you have allergies to dust or mildew. The mix of the antique shops makes the whole place a wanderers paradise, a dreamers heaven, a story lovers ultimate setting for you begin to imagine far more in these streets.

If you like books, this needs to be on your list.It's almost overwhelming. Wonderful range and always the chance of finding something to treasure. It's a relatively easy to navigate place, so choose the topics you most want if you want to have time to do other things.

I recall going to Hay 20 years ago and finding the bookshops expensive. Not sure if my expectations have changed or the prices in Hay have been moderated but I found plenty of books I had been searching for at reasonable prices. We had a lovely lunch in a cafe and looked at the Thursday market too. In all an enjoyable morning. I was slightly surprised by the number of empty shops and shops for sale so I do hope these will soon be filled with more bookshops!

Lost an hour in here, could have spent far more time. Amazing selection of books and easy to find system in place (which is more than I can say for some of the other bookshops). Wish I could have bought the £900 1st edition Tolkien...

Its central position means that this is one of the bookshops I always find time for, and there's usually an item or two that comes home with me. This year particularly enjoyed the window's colony of Penguins on a snowscape of dazzling white textile! Good general stock, though you may find yourself sorting through vast piles on the floor.

it is a lovely little town for us book worms. chance to find books rare and special books.
but one thing is strange; they dont want buy your books, not even look at them !

Una cittadina interamente dedicata ai libri... ci sono decine di librerie, generaliste e specializzate (peccato non essere riuscita ad entrare in quella con mappe e libri di geografia, siamo arrivati lì dopo le 17).
Molto bella la libreria storica Richard Booth, con affascinanti saloni in legno su diversi piani e un vastissimo assortimento di libri.
In giro ci sono anche scaffali pieni di libri, nel cortile sotto il castello o negli antri delle case, senza venditore nei paraggi: si lasciano i soldi del libro usato che si vuole acquistare in un’apposita cassettina.
