From Salcombe, take the ferry to East Portlemouth Landing then follow the road west until you hit the coast path. From Gara Rock, there's a lovely short-cut back to Mill Bay through an ancient green lane lined with fascinating trees.
There's often an outdoor coffee/food van outside the Gara Rock hotel.

Along with the Bolt Head walk this is a must if you are visiting Salcombe. The long way round follows the cliffs and does have significant ascents and descents. Dont believe the signpost at Mill Bay it is not 1.25 miles if you follow the coastal path more like 2.25. But once you reach Gara Rock and have taken sustinence from the pasty van there is a shorter route back. Strong recommend.

You'll start with a short ferry ride across the estuary and then a pleasant walk to Gara Rock where there is hotel offering food and/or drink. This makes a nice circular walk

Stunning unmissable section of the coast path. NT parking at Mill Beach, which is lovely and a super duper restaurant at Gara rocks. Perfect.

This is a relatively short but pretty walk. Some of the paths are narrow and quite steep, so not the best with poor footwear or on a wet day. But you get a lovely mixture of costal views and woodlands.

Stunning Views. A bit scary in places if you are not keen on heights but worth it for the views. The ferry trip across the bay was a nice experience.
We were looking forward to having lunch at the Gara Rock Hotel but found the restaurant manager very unwelcoming so we didn't bother.

After taking the ferry taxi to east Portlemouth, the map was pretty easy to follow. Just one part when you should turn upwards rather than end up in one of the secluded bays is the only part which could be made easier to read. Then you walk up to the higher parts, overlooking the sea, brilliant views, path quite tight and do feel quite precarious in parts. Follow the walk to gara rock and the hotel for a drink and food. Lovely easy walk back inland via a path through backs of fields all the way to sunny Bay, I think. Says moderate, I'd say strenuous, but I am rotund!! Enjoy

A stunning coastal walk to Gara Rock, wonderful in the winter sunshine even with stormy seas. Gara Rock is a great place to rest, have a drink or some food and soak in the amazing wild, coastal views.

I read a review another lady had put on here. She was so right. The walk starts off through woods with wonderful views of Salcombe and the beaches below. But then after the memorial to the lifeboat men the path becomes narrow with sheer drops. I have to say I was frightened as I don't like heights or sheer drops. My legs turned to jelly and I got vertigo, I couldn't look at the view, I just couldn't wait for us to be away from the edge. I was with my daughter who doesn't mind heights and she had to help me up rocks and around bends that were very close to the edge. I was so pleased to see The Gara Rock Hotel and to be safe.
If you don't mind heights and sheer drops you will love this walk as it really is beautiful.
