This is not a well known house but definitely worth a visit. It’s on the hillside just through Bowles’s on Windermere. It was designed rather than evolving and has amazing examples of the Arts and Crafts Movement craft. All are well displayed and guided tours are available. The furniture speakers for it self and is accompanied by other examples of art work including tiles, fabrics, beaten copper, pottery and glass. A real gem for anyone with an interest in the Arts and Crafts Movement. There is also currently a modern exhibition celebrating the lives and work of women influencers from the Cumbria area.

Lovely place to meet up with friends and family for coffee or lunch on a cold day. Staff efficient and friendly. Drinks of a good quality .

What an absolutely beautiful hark back to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau Movements. The house is truly awe inspiring. It was a stunning house filled with wonderful furniture made by craftsmen and women, the wood carvings on the walls, the beautiful William Morris designs, the amazing stained glass windows to even the door handles which were made of bronze, carved into a leaf. From the person working in the gift shop, the volunteer guide to the ladies in the tea room, everyone was so welcoming and lovely. The views are stunning and look directly onto Lake Windermere. I would encourage anyone to visit this beautiful, unsung house. I cannot recommend it enough. I will leave some surprises for you to discover and see but do visit if you are ever up in the fabulous Lake District.

if there was a 'frequent flyer' award for Blackwell visits I reckon I could qualify. over many years I have taken different family and friends. my recent visit was as enjoyable as always. the current exhibition Unearthed by Amy Williams, is a visual delight. because the mist closed down the views the visit made me concentrate even more on the house and the splendid details in every part of design and construction. every single visit and cuppa in the cafe is a delight in very civilised surroundings. I should add that now the entrance includes admission for the rest of the year and a generous 30% off our next visit of the day, the very interesting Jetty Museum. I was very impressed with the reception staff taking care to describe Blackwell to a family who had never visited before.

To those who admire the vision and skills of the craftsmen of the Arts and Crafts era Blackwell is a must. The house occupies an enviable position overlooking the quieter shores of Lake Windermere, and each window/window seat is designed to maximise the vista from the house. Northern facing windows are set within inglenooks around a fireplace bringing warm comfort to the colder portions of the house. The detail of the woodcarvings incorporated into the downstairs rooms are remarkable and the white painted lounge brings dazzling contrast. Of course the furniture present the same skills and attention to detail, the door fittings and window handles and openings are superb. The small cafe is worth a stopover for light lunch or just a cake and coffee.

Really enjoyed our visit to Blackwell. All of the rooms were interesting. Lovely history and furniture. Even on a rainy day, the rooms were bright and cheerful. We also enjoyed the exhibition, Cumbrian Views by Paul Scott. Some fabulous works which make comments on life in this century ........and things that we need to be concerned about ......both now and in the future. Very thought provoking. If we are in the area we will certainly visit again. A fabulous visit.

If you have any interest in the arts, or architecture, or furniture design, this is a great place to visit. The house is comprehensively presented, and the information provided is interesting and informative. It's not a very big place, and a lot of the rooms are closed to the public, so you can easily complete your viewing within one hour, if not less. I really liked the way the old and the new were presented in conjunction with each other, and sympathetically displayed.
The gift shop had some really lovely items, but they were very high priced, I think they would benefit from having a wider price range.
The tea room was lovely, with great service. We visited on a Monday, which has a reduced menu, which was a shame, so we only tried the cakes, I can recommend the Frangipani and Almond Slice.
The scenery surrounding the house is beautiful, and as you are advised during the tour, views are deliberately framed in the windows. A very pleasant experience all around.

Visited here today. No idea why I've never been before have been regularly visiting this area for around 35 years. Greeted by a really lovely lady who gave us a very warm welcome and told us lots about the history of the house. We were the only visitors. Absolutely stunning design of a house. My children were very interested seeing an arts and crafts designed house. Small house but beautiful and very informative about the architect and history. Would highly recommend.

Unfortunately we can only allow service dogs into Blackwell House and the garden, but dogs are welcome on the courtyard area by the main entrance where there is patio furniture for owners to sit with them if they wish.
