An excellent museum.

The Dock Museum is an innovative and impressive structure utilising an old dry dock as its base. There are small, side exhibitions detailing the history of Barrow, the war years etc., but the crowning glory is the main section dealing with ship building.

As well as being informative and interesting, the ship models were beautiful and of such intricate design that they, themselves, were testament to the Barrow craftsmen.

There is also a very nice coffee shop cum cafe and, on a very cold day, we couldn’t resist a couple of bowls of homemade soup, which was excellent.

All in all, the Dock Museum is a stunning asset to the town and well worth a visit.

An excellent museum of Barrow shipbuilding and the area.

The museum is well worth a visit as it contains many examples of Barrows shipbuilding past, and some general history of the area. It is cleverly constructed within the walls of an old dry dock. A highlight was the large models of some ships that had been built at Barrow : these have superb detail and were probably used to generate further sales for the yards concerned . Free admission and parking. Good cafe on site.

Great museum, clean and airy. So much to see about the area here and the shipping industry. .

Great museum with excellent facilities. The entrance is only a few yards from the parking area. It has heaps of local pieces of history and some excellent ship models on the first floor. There's a cafe and gift shop. Staff were friendly. I noticed there were handy seats you could take with you and use within the museum if required as there were only a few seats provided on the second floor. The museum had areas for younger children to use with drawing paper provided and some exhibits were hands on for the younger ones to try. I loved the dry dock you can view from the ground and first floor. There was also an art exhibition on the lower level (one down from the entrance/ground level) displaying artists work of which some were for sale. Apparently the art changes on a regular basis. There's also an outside grass and picnic area which is well laid out and gives any young ones an opportunity to have a little run around. We spent a good 2hrs in this museum. Just a heads up - there's also a lift to all floors should you need it. Once on each floor there are no steps to negotiate - it's a dream to go round the exhibitions.
