Check the availability of the small boat required to ferry you across before visiting, and then make sure you have waterproofs. Once on the Island there's history aplenty. It's where Lambert Simnol landed, the pretender

The ferry trip was lovely - I have slight mobility problems and the ferryman was really helpful without having to be asked.
The castle is very picturesque - needless to say the views were amazing.
Probably just an afternoon or morning trip rather than an entire day.

Nice area close to burrow on furnace. The boat trip goes daily as long as weather permits. Several trips daily but I'd imagine it closes in the winter months. Nice little cafe here.

We visited on the 18th of August and the ferry trip was around 5/10 mins till you arrived on the island the guys with there boats were really polite and jolly the fare is really cheap £6 return for adults and £4 return for children the castle was really amazing to explore and the pebbley beach was good too you could really get the effect of it being invaded as ships passed buy with the waves they made the pub is really nice the landlord was very helpful when I asked him questions about the island,pub and camping we will visit again but next time visit for camping which is really cheap at £5 per tent per night can't wait to stay . To all involved in all the island keep it up its amazing.

Easy to find as there is only one street

Took the ferry over, £6 return. Good value as the island is beautiful. Saw the old castle and went to the pub on the island before walking around the island on the beach.

Was a lovely trip out on the piel ferry to the island. It felt peaceful walking around, especially the ruins and the beach. Views are amazing. Sat and had a non alcoholic drink outside the pub. Will definatley visit again

Don’t waste your time what a disappointment, ferry is £6 not £5 as
Advertised but whats a £1 was told ferry back would be between 9:30 and 10 in morning to leave island as we booked to stay in the ship inn for a night at the cost of £70 bed and breakfast, and was told there was food at the ship inn, we was on the last ferry to island so no way off getting off island until morning, when we went into put to tell them we had arrived and had a room booked the lad disappeared for around 10-15 mins and come back and said yes your rooms ready your in room 2 i asked why when i booked room 1, answer was thats the room thats ready what a start, so went up to room to find a heap of sh*t 2 pillows with no pillow cases on a mattress protector but no sheet and a duvet with a cover thats it, there was 2 cups with tea and coffee but no milk and no kettle, next the bathroom shower was dirty no towels and the sink was broken was cracked and had a hole in, how ever left our stuff in room and went downstairs to go for a walk, on way out 2 lads was standing and asked if we would eat stale cake but they would discount it for us but kindly declined, we asked where the menu was to order food and was told they were not doing food but could have a burger or a sandwich, i stood at the entrance to the kitchen which was disgusting stuff uncovered food lying around ,food on top of food, raw meat on sink floor was dirty, there was a lad standing i asked why no food he said just not apart from burgers which was pre cooked and looked dreadful he picked one up and it had a hole threw middle and he said il give that to someone later and laughed, all they was doing was re heating them in a deep fat fryer and putting cheese on and handing them out of a window, i asked what time breakfast would be he said theres no way we was getting breakfast they was not doing it so was not happy there was no food as said there was but after seeing the state of the kitchen and the people doing the food i wouldn’t of ate anything anyway we didn’t bring much with us expecting food but we made do, we left it at that and proceeded out for our walk, we arrived back and went back up to the room for a snack on what we had brought with us, a random lad who worked there just walked into the room then said sorry didn’t know anyone was in here and walked back out, we just continued what we was doing, we decided to go back out for a second walk where we didn’t go first time, we did that and spoke to a local who lived on island and said the put had been open till 3am that morning with people drinking to which i said i hope not and didn’t want it happening that night as was staying in room upstairs, we finished our walk and went back into put to head up to our room another lad come threw the door after us and said can i help you i said no just going up to our room he said ok and walked off we went up to the room and went into bathroom and whilst washing me hands herd a voice and went a come out the same lad who stopped us on way in was standing there and asked what we doing in here we haven’t booked or payed at this point i got annoyed i said we have booked and have payed he said no ones told us, i asked if any of them had a clue what they were doing or what was going on and who was running the place he said him down stairs is acting manager as they didn’t have one and the main person who looked after it was abroad, he said do i want to speak to him i said no no point he’s as clueless as you really, i showed him my booking email and he said well that will do, eh that will do i said it will have to its booked we here and no ferry now until morning he said no its fine and started to walk off, i said are we going to get anymore hassle or is that it, he said no no il tell them, I’m not joking if we could have getting off the island that night we would have just left there and then what a dump, all run by young dope smokers staff room was stinking and all just getting drunk amongst them selves treating the place as there private party place, as at times bar was unattended and people waiting to be served, the night went by quite peaceful to be fair but couldn’t wait till morning headed out at 9:15 for the ferry we was told be 9:30 and 10 guess what still sat waiting until 11:15 and finally arrived and off we went, thank god never again

Piel Island is small and dominated by the castle. The views are calm and scenic.
There is a ferry available to get here on. The service is laid back and friendly.

hi , i will be traveling through England June 2019 and staying in barrow a few days , is it easy to get to the island from barrow town centre , i will be staying in the furness railway , is it only a walk away to get the boat over , thanks .

you can get the bus to row island and the ferry boat will take there and back
Is there still free parking at the ferry terminal? Would I be OK to leave my car for 2 days if I camped on the island
