We travelled from South Manchester specifically to see the Furness Abbey after seeing Fountains Abbey some months back. The intention was to stay in the free car park to the south of the Abbey.
A bit of a warning here, our sat nav brought us the quickest route of course, but going that way we found the road blocked by huge stone slabs. This was quite frustrating as we were a stones-throw from the car park but had to turn round and find the alternate way in, which turns out had far better access, so beware.
We reached the car park and could park easily. It is extremely popular with dog walkers, there are cars arriving and leaving very frequently, plus there are visitors going to the pleasent cafe situated just a few yards away. As evening falls the place becomes deserted, and the car park is very remote and isolated at night, with no lights anywhere. Luckily there were two other vans staying over so it didn't feel too bad. Early morning brings back the dog walkers and the place gets busy very quickly once more.
Next morning we walked to the visitor centere, there the staff gave us an informed talk on the history of the abbey and the surrounding area, the hotel and the railway station. We then went through the exhibit room and out to the Abbey itself. The Abbey had a couple of nice examples of surviving ceilings, and some very interesting scaffolding helping to stabilise some of the building that had started to sink. We left the Abbey by the visitor centre and walked back to the cafe for a coffee and a bite to eat before setting off. A great day was made even better by a visit to the Lakeland Motor Museum which was on our way back to the Motorway.

The Abbey is so beautiful! The details and preservation of parts of the Abbey complex are stunning. The museum adds to the interest. I bought a guidebook and this really brought the site alive.
The visitor assistant gave us so much help and advice about where we could eat locally. We walked up some steps from the car park and reached the Abbey hotel in a few minutes. Three cappuccinos and a latte cost less than £12 and its a really beautiful smart hotel. She also gave a local map showing Dalton in Furness as well as the beaches on Walney Island!

After an enjoyable lunch at the Cafe, we passed on the Abbey (there's a fee) and walked the spacious grounds.

Absolutely beautiful place, a must see for anybody interested in seeing old buildings or ruins. Went with my partner and my 1 year old who also enjoyed the freedom of wandering around as it is very open, and was very quiet which surprised us for a weekend day. Last minute decision to go and we are so glad we did.

I absolutely love ruins. There weren't many people there, it was so quiet and peaceful. Took loads of pictures.

Beautiful historical monument.
Even better to visit in the sunshine as it’s a huge site. The lady in the shop was very helpful and gave me some interesting information before my look around. It was reasonable in price and I could have stayed as long as I wanted (up to closing time) a great place to visit if you love history.

Although a member of the NT, Furness Abbey was not affiliated via English Heritage but notwithstanding, I recommend a visit. I had the whole place to myself but then I was there at 10am on the dot ! Amazing remains to wander around and imagine how it must have been in the day. Would have been perfect if there was an onsite cafe instead of having to go down the road for a coffee but nonetheless worth a visit. I even took out an annual membership with English Heritage whilst I was there and I hope I get my money's worth out of it.

I arrived here as part of a circular walk, it was a clean, neat and amazing site which is covered by a lovely coffee shop nearby.

Was staying in Ulverston for a night & was looking for something to fill a morning. As we are EH members we decided to pay Furness Abbey a visit.
So glad we did. The lady on reception was so helpful and knowledgeable, she obviously had a real passion for her role.
The Abbey itself was very impressive, do buy a guide book to get a real feel for it. We were lucky as being January we were practically the only people there. There are some really interesting elements, such as the latrines, kitchen and roofed infirmary as well as following the water course!
Ground was a bit spongy due to the rain and when you learn about the foundations you will be even more surprised!
Added bonus of watching the trains!

What a wonderfully, romantic place this is. In the valley on the outskirts of Barrow-in-Furness, the ruins of Furness Abbey are beautiful. There's plenty of information available both in the museum and in the guide book, great value at £2.50.
