Lovely statue in Market Square. Good view and a nice place to sit and watch the day go by. Overall, I would recommend passing by during your day out in Durham.

Read the history of the "man on the horse" and decide for yourself whether to view with disdain. It's a wonderful statue and ask yourself does the horse have a tongue ? Dominating the market place which is a wonderful hub for one of the most beautiful, fascinating cities on the planet.

Located and dominating Market Place in Durham is this fine equestrian statue in honour of Charles William Vane Stewart ( 1778 - 1854 ) aka 3rd Marquess Of Londonderry .
The monument was sculpured by Raphael Monti ( 1818 - 1881 ) and shows the Marquess at age 42 resplendent in Hussar uninform ,he fought in the Penisular Wars,French Revolution Wars,The Irish Rebellion and the Napoleonic Wars ,the statue is huge ,double sized and is so well detailed and beautifully weathered by the elements, its a landmark feature in Durham, is most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area and easy to locate on Market Place.

This statue dominates the market place and has done since 1861. It is oversized and impressive. It cost £2000 at the time, the money being raised by his widow. The Marquis of Londonderry was a very colourful character.

Lumpen statue of someone nobody’s heard of or cares about. Dominates an otherwise lovely square. The stone could be used to build houses for the homeless in Durham and the statue melted down to make something useful. He is said to have done some good things to do with coal but he was part of Britain’s unfortunate aristocratic history.

the hustle of a small town square was great. that it is not flat made for different viewing places. great to people watch. During university break so different than a college crowd.

Neptune statue is way better. The statue looks decent but the history is bad because it about someone who earned millions exploiting Durham miners. That’s it.
