A hidden and well-kept secret for thousands of years. The 6th century Church with a grave yard of lays the legend of Guto Nyth Bran a famous athlete in 1730's and Thomas Chester that fought in the well documented Battle of Rorke's Drift, Zulu War in 1879.
The Brynfynon Pub opposite that offers good meals and a cold pint in the sunmer and rooms to stay the night. There was also a monastery nearby at Mynachdy but Henry Vlll destroyed it in 16th century.
Also archaeologists and historians have come from around the world to visit the 'Lion Stone of Judea old and the Ark of the Covenant' tracing back 2500 years (know locally as the Elephant stone) in the nearby village of Ynysybwl.
There is also the ancient burial site close by. The Ark of the Covenant (the gold plated wooden chest in Jewish and Christian tradition houses the tablets bearing the 10 commandments that were given to Moses by God) is said to be buried deep in the ancient burial site.
Astrologers have traced the secret religious artifact to rural land in Ynysybwl that is in walking distance of Llanwonno Church.
If history isn't your thing, through the woods is the Guto Cabin that sells soup, bacon rolls and other treats. They will direct you to the reservoir and waterfalls that are in close distance. On my visits in the summer I saw photographers taking snaps of snakes basking in the sun.

Passed by and called in today 26/8/19, gorgeous building which was open, sadly the grounds are greatly overgrown but still worth a visit to see the grave of Guto Nyth Bran, there is a gate on the side wall wall opposite the Brynffynon pub too, lol. It is possible to park at the church either to explore it or the forestry trails nearby, either way, well worth a visit.

Beautiful very old church Llanwynno has such an important link with the past. Volunteer tour guides were excellent. Ask the pub for the contact of the church warden to organise guided tour.

This little church, holds a secrets that I have been trying to find the answer for over 8 years, the secret is the Grave of Pte Thomas Chester that was a Defender at R/D 1879,
Thomas Chester was Inturned in this Cemetery after an accident in 1905,
Inside of this little Church the feeling you get is of the older days, there is an atmosphere which you can not explain, you can get the keys for the Church from the public house across the road, also of lnterest to some at the side of the Church they filmed Dr WHO,

St Gwynno's church in the tiny hamlet of Llanwonno surrounded by a large forestry plantation! One church and one pub there used to eb a terraced row of houses but long gone. The church is famous locally for having the grave of the mythological Guto Nyth Bran. Guto was born in Llwyncelyn, a small village found today in the community of Porth. It was said that his talent first came to prominence as he was helping his father herd sheep, when he managed to chase and catch a wild hare. Once locals heard of this there were new rumours every day of him catching hares, foxes and birds. One such legend has him running from his home to the local town of Pontypridd and back, a total distance of some 7 miles (11 km), before his mother's kettle had boiled. The Nos Galan Race in Mountain Ash in commemoration of Guto Nith Bran at New Year! St Gywnno's church orinigates from an Early Celtic Christian church some parts of which were incorporated in the Victorian rebuild. Llanwonno pub has some good ales and meals!

After spending a day in Pontypridd, we decided to make a detour to here on the way home. After what seemed like ages driving up windy mountain passes, we discovered it. It was very isolated, with only a pub nearby, which we didn't visit. We stopped to look around the chuchyard and take some photos. Unfortunately we couldn't access the church, but then it is very isolated.

This is a beautiful place, set out in the forestry with some fabulous quiet walks nearby, worth a visit if only to read the board regarding the Nos Galon new year race held locally, fabulous setting, large car park in the pub nearby (amazing food) lol great area for dog walks, we spend hours in the forest, marked routes.

This is a very old Church in an isolated place with just a pub nearby.
Called in on an off chance, plenty of history here and the surrounding views are breath taking. Really peaceful and serene inside.
Lots of old graves in the large mostly overgrown graveyard but the most famous one, just outside the side door, is of Guto Nyth Bran, 1700-1737 real name Griffith Morgan. local legend. Please Google him.
Then go across the road to The Brynfynnon Pub, and have a fabulous meal.

Lovely church and graveyard try to make time for a good look around.
The famous runner Gito nithbran is buried in the graveyard.
If you work up a thirst or get peckish visit the pub next to the church.
If you are energetic take a walk on one of the forest trails.
