I take it that you mean why has the fare gone up. Well you could write to Chris Price, at their registered office in Pickering but I suspect that it is much the same reason as everything else has gone up in general. Twenty four miles of railway track, plus all the stations, electricity, employment costs, coal, oil,maintenance of track, carriages and locomotives plus a huge number of other expenses, encountered in running such a large institution, doesn't come cheap. It used to cost six and a half million pounds per year to run. I suspect that this figure has increased by as much as another million at present. If you don't want anything fancy, you can still get reasonably priced return tickets to anywhere on the line and if you go the whole hog from Pickering to Whitby or vice versa, that a 48 mile round trip by steam, if you choose the right time. It still represents good value and helps towards keeping this magnificent railway going, for future generations.

The short answer is NO. NYMR don't have concessionary fares for Senior Citizens. This Friday 03 June is peak travel and return fare from Pickering to Goathland is £21.50 or the single fare is £12.90. It would be slightly cheaper if you went off-peak, 6-30 June and 1-22 July. The only big concessions are for members, who get a 50% reduction in ticket price but of course, you have to pay for the membership. If you plan to travel a lot or want to support the railway, membership would be worthwhile. If you are just travelling on a one off basis, the standard line ticket rates are best. Hope that helps. How many of you are travelling if it is more than 2 it is cheaper to have a compartment for up to 6 to yourselves.

The answer to your question is yes but bear in mind that parking is limited at all stations and it is advisable to arrive in good time. You can always pass the time having a cuppa or exploring the gift shop.

My biased answer is yes I love the trrian so want to be on it as much as I can, the views are good, and the short time you have in Whitby will be a good taster for your full day visit
